Both cards plain with printed stamp and 9 x 11 cm. Both bearing the Society's oval purple stamp. Card One: He is 'leaving town on business for two or three days' and so cannot attend the meeting of the Indian Section Committee. Card Two: He will 'with pleasure support Abney if in town', but may not be there on the day.

On one side of an irregular piece of paper, dimensions 13.5 x 18 cm. Ruckled, and with traces of glue from mounting on reverse. Signature clear and complete, but with minor damage to signature caused by removal from mount. Reads 'I request that you will be pleased to order that all Letters for me may be sent here.' Docketed on reverse (with slight cropping along right-hand edge), '21 Augt. 1836. Feversham Rt Hon S. Lushington M.P.', beneath which, 'Mr Johnson | to be attended t specially | 22 Augt.', and 'ansd 22nd Augt | DWP316 | Attended to | [signed] Laurence | 23 Augt 1836.'.

First Edition. Very good copy in the original title-blocked cloth. Spine band and panel edges very slightly dust-dulled and rubbed. See his entry in the Oxford DNB, with that of the engraver Charles John Smith FSA (1803-1838), the brother of the recipient. 1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, on first leaf of bifolium, the second leaf carrying a thin strip of tape from the mount. Folded twice. Addressed to 'Wm. James Smith Esqr:' and signed 'Combermere.' (the addressed and signature being somewhat smudged and merged). He informs him that Lady Comberemere will send him 'the correspondence of the late Mrs: Cathne: Stapleton with the Grenville family, as soon as Lady Delamere (to whom it was lent) returns it.' He concludes with the statement: 'The enclosed is quite correct.' Catherine Stapleton's correspondence is now in the British Library.
