Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'New Light on 'Piers Plowman'' is a significant scholarly investigation into one of the most complex and enduring works of Middle English literature. Written by Allan H. Bright, this work offers a detailed examination of the life and surroundings of William Langland, the presumed author of th…e visionary poem. By exploring the geography and local history of the Malvern Hills, Bright provides fresh insights into the origins and allegorical layers of the poem. The study delves into the social and religious context of the 14th century, shedding light on the historical realities that informed the poetic vision of 'Piers Plowman'. This book is an essential resource for students of medieval studies and literary historians, as it bridges the gap between the text's allegorical complexity and its physical, historical setting. Through rigorous analysis, Bright seeks to solve long-standing mysteries surrounding the identity of Langland and the specific inspirations for his influential work.Focusing on the intersections of biography, geography, and literary analysis, 'New Light on 'Piers Plowman'' remains a valuable contribution to the field of medieval literature, helping readers understand the man behind the masterpiece and the landscape that shaped his moral and spiritual inquiry. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. In den WarenkorbHardcover. 8vo. pp. [ii], 63, [iii]. Contemporary dark blue buckram lettered gilt on spine. From the library of Allan Heywood Bright (1862 1941) Liberal politician, distinguished book collector and author of books on Middle English with his pictorial/armorial bookplate (by Downey) on the front pastedown showing coats of arms and… the motto 'Post Tenebras Lucem' and a view of a valley with hills beyond, a church and a rising sun. Bound-in hand written signed letter from J. R. Chancellor to 'Dear Allan' written on headed note paper from Government House, Mauritius and dated 22. 2. 13 consisting of about 130 words in which he refers to Bright's interest in papers or laws dealing with the subject of disposal of property by will. He explains that the Code Napoleon in Mauritius was amended and passed last year and this has proved to be most unpopular. He encloses a copy of the debate and the amending Ordinance which he does not rate highly. Pages 48-50 include J. E. Chancellor's contribution to the debate. First leaf folded.
