The book has been protected with a facsimile dust jacket (which was present when we acquired it). Juliet Bredon, also known as Juliet Lauru (c.1881-1937) grew up in China in the late 1800s. Enrolled in both English and Chinese schools, she wrote extensively about Chinese customs, rituals and daily life in her many books. Her father, Sir Robert Edward Bredon, and her uncle, Sir Robert Hart, were inspectors in the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs Service. She lived through the Boxer Rebellion and wrote an article about the experience entitled A Lady Besieged in Peking. She also wrote numerous articles such as the 1921 article "The People of the Wilderness" for National Geographic under the pen name of Adam Warwick.

Jacket also in Very Good condition, tanned and with a couple of small stains at the bottom of the front panel.

Printed in scarlet and black with decorations (sights of China) in grey. First edition. Edges worn and with some stains, a bit discolored. Sumptuous large and attractive deluxe book printed in Shanghai. Usually seen in a decorated paper binding, this copy still shows much of its original crimson silk splendor. Not perfect, but the book restorer has done an excellent job on the binding with its dragon-motif red single color damask. Feel free to ask for pictures.
