Vellum yellowed with age and lightly marked, as is usual. Corners lightly bumped and rear board with light vertical crease at center. Text block with red speckled edges and light plus age toning. Pencil annotations to front free endpaper. Damp staining to front hinge not visible elsewhere in volume. With engraved title page. Shelved in Room G. 1380044. Special Collections.

12mo., pp.[xvi], 310, [xxxiv]. Woodcut initials, head-pieces and tail-pieces, illustration to p.(xvi). Occasional underlining in sepia ink. A a little loss to lower fore-edge corner of F1 not affecting text, a few tiny spots, faint dampstain to tail margin affecting pp.219-239. Contemporary vellum, brown morocco gilt label to spine, fore-edges slightly overlapped, edges sprinkled blue. Vellum a little greyed with some slight marks, top edge darkened, a few pencilled notes and codes to endpapers, very good indeed. Armorial bookplate of Sir Charles Mordaunt, Baronet, of Walton, Warwickshire to ffep. The 6th Baronet (c.1697-1778) seems the most likely candidate, based on the style of bookplate and the incorporated crest of Conyers (he married Dorothy Conyers of Walthamstow in 1720). Mordaunt was a landowner and Tory politician who held his seat in the House of Commons for 40 years from 1734 to 1774. Second reimpression of the first Elzevir edition (also published 1634). Admired by Dibdin as 'a beautiful little volume'. Willems 412, Dibdin (4th edn) II 384.

Legatura coeva in pelle, titolo in oro su tassello in pelle al dorso (con mancanze), fregi in oro al dorso; tagli rossi.  Opera dedicata alla storia del Belgio, assai simile, per formato, impaginazione, frontespizio ed argomento, alle Piccole Repubbliche degli Elzeviri, che fu chiara ispirazione. Edizione in gran parte originale di documenti e scritti di vari autori relativi alla storia di Liegi (Belgio) e del suo vescovato. Mark Zuesius Boxhorn (1612-1653), storico olandese, si dedicò ad opere di storia fiamminga, alla cura di edizioni di classici e di emblemi ed infine al diritto della navigazione. Pubblicato probabilmente da Wilhelm Christian van der Boxe (Cfr. Rahir), a dispetto delle indicazioni tipografiche al frontespizio. Dicreto esemplare (assai rifilato, qualche brunitura).   Rahir, Catalogue de livres imprimés par les Elzevier, p. 201, n. 1858. Wanting ffep, head and foot of spine and lower edges a trifle rubbed. 18th-century French bibliographic note to fly, illegible near contemporary autograph on [*]8. Marcus Zuerius Boxhornius è il nome latinizzato dell'erudito olandese Marcus Zuerius van Boxhorn (Bergen, 1612 ? 1653). Nel presente testo, qui in originale edizione postuma, ipotizza la presenza di un linguaggio preesistente, da lui chiamato "scythian", all'origine delle lingue indoeuropee, un linguaggio che nel corso dei secoli è andato progressivamente inglobando le parlate greche, latine, persine, tedesche, olandesi, slave, celtiche, etc., ma non ebrea. > Graesse, I, 515. 400 gr.

Hardcover, bound in full period natural vellum with overlapping edges, titled in early ink manuscript on the spine. All page edges are speckled blue. The vellum covers are very slightly soiled. [20], 5-1136 & [48] pages, with a pictorial title page engraved by "C v. D.", decorative initials, and head & tailpieces. The engraving features a proscenium arch and stage on which Atlas, holding the celestial spheres, is confronted by Hercules bearing his sword and shield. The book label of "L. Marcel" is mounted on the front endpaper and there are previous owners' notes on the front and rear endpapers. There are also a very few markings in the text. An otherwise near fine attractive book. First edition, first printing of this variorum edition edited by Boxhorn. Titus Maccius Plautus (c. 254â"184 BC) was a Roman playwright of the Old Latin period. His comedies are the earliest Latin literary works to have survived in their entirety. He is known to have had an influence on Shakespeare and Moliere. Marcus Zuerius van Boxhorn (1612-1653) was an important historical linguist who discovered the similarity among Indo-European languages. The text is in Latin.
