Man is facing the havoc of natural disasters since the dawn of human civilisation on our planet earth. Earthquakes floods landslides wildfire cyclones tornado avalanche etc. were the earliest forms of natural disasters. With the development of civilisation man learnt the disaster management techniques. Now man has made tremendous and extraordinary achievements in the field of science and technology. Though disasters cannot be prevented yet the loss caused to live and property can be avoided or mitigated if proper prewarning system could be applied and prompt rescue mitigation and rehabilitation measures could be used. Indian sub continent falls within a geographic area where natural calamities are common phenomena. Its unique sub continental dimensions coupled with factors like its geographical location and the behaviour of monsoon make it one of the most hazardprone countries in the world. India is vulnerable to various natural disasters like floods Tsunamis droughts cyclones earthquakes landslides avalanches forest fires and the like. Disasters occur with great regularity and despite better preparedness to meet all contingencies the economic and social costs on account of losses caused by disasters continue to mount year after year. 274 pp.

A disaster is defined as a serious disruption of the functioning of society causing widespread human material or environmental losses which exceed the ability of affected society to cope on its own resources. In fact this clearly implies that the poor people/society are the most vulnerable to hazards/disasters as they posses fewer resources and have very limited capacity to prevent or cope with the impacts. No doubts the sheer scope of the social and economic impacts of natural approach to dealing with the concept of risk and vulnerability in modern societies. Also the social and economic costs of disasters very widely and are difficult to estimate on a global basis. This book is an attempt in the direction of collating some valuable information on vital aspects of disasters and disaster management. 262 pp.

Vulnerability to global environmental change. 4. Risk analysis and risk management. 5. Precautionary principle. 6. Applications of the precautionary principle. Glossary of terms. Bibliography. Index. The entire globe is vulnerable to disastersman made or natural. Recent earthquake is Pakistan and India (2005) tsunami in Indonesia Malaysia India and Sri Lanka Katerina in USA etc. have been frequently reminding us that we are vulnerable to disasters every time everywhere. Going to back hurricane Mitch wrought fearful damage across Central American states in just 48 hours. World Disasters Report explores the ways environmental change and human short sightedness have combined to trigger disaster. Earthquakes and hurricanes have sparked instant media interest and quick humanitarian reactions. But more worrying is the chronic and rapidly increasing vulnerability of poorer countries to extreme and recurrent weather events. In Russia the harsh but normally manageable winter has become a catalyst for disaster as institutional and economic collapse destroy social safety nets and the very basis upon which people make a living. In Ecuador recovery from the latest EI Nino may take a decade but two more could strike in that time. This book provides highly useful material on the subject global disasters vulnerability and precautionary. 268 pp.

In fact disasters are followed by a great loss of livers property environment and physical infrastructure. Basically hazards and disasters can be classified in two categories natural and man made. The occurrence of natural disasters like floods earthquake tsunami tornado landslides drought etc. cannot be prevented while man made disasters can be avoided by meticulous planning and precautions. With population explosion urbanisation and other commercial activities have grown up tremendously. As such man has started misuse abuse and overuse of natural resources. Deforestation tourism and other activities in snow clad areas or coastal zones industrialisation etc. have dwindled the ecobalance. Green house gases and industrial and vehicle smoke has caused ozone layer depletion. Nuclear tests in oceans and underground production of hazard chemical products has added to the problem of environmental pollution. These man made hazards have posed a challenge for survival of life (both fauna and flora) on the earth. Keeping in view the massive destruction need was felt for disaster and hazard management. Thus forewarning systems are developed. And arrangements are being made.
