Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Three men who believe themselves to be the Teacher, the Messenger and the Awakened share a locked ward, get along like brothers, and regard the hospital staff as the only genuinely disturbed people in the building. A fourth patient, who appears on no list, lies with the blanket over his head and sighs. When the consultant schedules them all for a lobotomy, they climb the highest mountain on earth without leaving the ward and ask God to make the human race slightly wiser. The results are not encouraging. They then try the opposite.Narrated by a medical student who watched the whole of it on tape, this is a comedy about faith, psychiatry and the durable human habit of curing anybody who says something true. It is ecumenical, irreverent, and entirely unwilling to tell you which of its characters is well.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A young man is sentenced to death for an elbow. He is not frightened, and that is the thing nobody can forgive him.His mother comes to the visiting room and makes him take off his cap. His lawyer, who has spent twenty-one years being a professional and has lately begun to think he would rather not die at his desk, finds that he cannot stop thinking about him. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A village priest and a man who used to be a priest sit in a church refectory in February and talk for three hours about God, love, fungi and the impossibility of the world. Neither of them knows that everything either of them says will come true, and that none of it will be of the slightest use.Three conversations, each between two of three people who are never in a room together: the priest and the defrocked man; the priest and the woman who paints icons she does not believe in; the defrocked man and the same woman, at one in the morning, over a bottle of communion wine and a fable about a toilet. And then the rooms run out, and there is a telephone that rings at three in the morning, and then does not ring at all.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A province is officially declared uninhabited, and its inhabitants take a fresh soul out of the packet every morning, because the disposable kind is cleaner, cheaper and altogether more hygienic than the old multi-use sort.A man in Sodom offers cold Coca-Cola to three travellers and saves his city without noticing. Two pensioners divorce each other, lovingly and by mutual arrangement, in order to emigrate together to a country that does not existSomewhere among them stands the author: a man who is a Jew particularly on Fridays, who weeps in an Orthodox church at Christmas, who once telephoned a toy company at two in the morning to establish whether the hole in his teddy bear was part of the original design, and who lost his temper with a satellite engineer over the question of whether trees can be blamed for the weather. These twenty-five pieces - parables, recollections, and three conversations between men with nothing left to lose - were written across thirty years and several countries by someone who was relieved of his homeland and discovered, to his own considerable surprise, that this was a relief. Every label he was ever handed turned out to be disposable, including the ones people are prepared to kill for. What is left when you throw them all away is the subject of this book, and it is a good deal funnier than that makes it sound.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - There is no cure for the common cold. You drink something hot, complain, and wait eight days. On Christmas Eve in Paris, eighteen-year-old Elya Statsky leaves the guarded home of her exiled Russian family and descends to a row of blue tents beside the Seine. There she meets Gleb-a penniless wanderer with a battered face, no papers, and an unsettling way of speaking about freedom, death, and love. By morning, Elya is determined to abandon the Sorbonne and follow him anywhere. Her father is equally determined to discover what the stranger wants. But Gleb's rags conceal a past none of them could have imagined-and a grief from which he has been walking away for years. Tender, philosophical, and sharply funny, The Common Cold is a novel about wealth and homelessness, exile and belonging, the stories people build to survive, and the unexpected encounters that can redirect an entire life. …

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Every description is a projection. Physics describes the world in space and time, mathematics in number and structure, philosophy in existence and cause - and none of these media need belong to the thing described. What remains when every such medium is withheld This book answers with a small, provable structure. A single test - ineliminability: a primitive is ineliminable if its denial cannot be stated without using it - is applied to the resources any formal description must use. Exactly four pass: Difference, Identity, Conditionality, and Taking, the DICT primitives. The book proves that each is ineliminable, that none can be defined from the other three, that the usual further candidates (negation, existence, number, cause, the observer) are either derived or eliminable, and that the four form an indivisible whole. It then shows that logic, arithmetic, geometry, mereology, category theory, and first-order ontology are not rival foundations but different ways of paying for the same four - and that under the arithmetic payment the four generate exactly the rational numbers, with zero structurally prior to one.The theory does not describe the substrate it is named for. It locates, from two sides, the only place where the substrate can be referred to without error, and it prices every step away from that place. From this comes a method, DICT analysis: inventory what a concept has been paid for, subtract, state the residue, then re-admit each medium as a declared cost. Appendices apply the method, under strict epistemic labelling, to the universe, vacuum, energy, gravity, matter, entropy, information, black holes, infinity, consciousness, money, death, God - and, as a test of scale-freedom, sour cream - and trace its affinities with Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Kant, Pascal, Seneca, and Palamas.Minimal in assumptions, the theory has nowhere to be wrong except in its count; and the count is proved.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Why does a species that learned to split the atom still knock on wood We have mapped the genome, photographed a black hole, and taught sand to think, and yet we light candles in the dark, cross our fingers, and feel a shiver on a mountaintop that no instrument can explain. The hunger for the miraculous did not die when science arrived. It simply changed clothes. This book takes one vivid, controversial case and follows it all the way down. Nicholas and Helena Roerich, painters and prophets of the inner fire, built a teaching they called Agni Yoga and a vision of culture as something sacred enough to protect by treaty. Around their strange and luminous story gathers a larger and more personal question: why human beings need miracles at all, and what that need reveals about the kind of creature we are.Neither a debunking nor a sermon, this is a field guide to wonder. It walks the hunger for the invisible into the brain scanner and the laboratory, onto the high passes of the Himalayas and into the minds of grieving animals. It asks where the future of science stops looking like science and starts looking like magic, why faith in a miracle so often outmuscles faith in a proof, where vision shades into illness, and whether anything like awe stirs behind the eyes of an elephant. The Roerichs walk through every chapter, painters and suspects both, but the real subject is the reader, the mystic animal who cannot quite put out the fire.Mysticism, wonder, consciousness, the Roerichs, neuroscience of awe, faith, the future of science.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - What is school actually for Once upon a time, the question had an answer, or at least a set of plausible candidates. Today it sits in the corner of the staffroom like an unclaimed coat, conspicuous, faintly embarrassing, no longer anyone's responsibility. The Pointless Classroom is a philosophical reckoning with the institution that shapes, and increasingly fails, every modern life. Drawing on the radical optimism of John Dewey, the American thinker who once dreamed of school as a workshop for free minds, this book traces how a vision built on trust, inquiry, and democratic participation curdled into testing, branding, theater, and bureaucratic exhaustion. Along the way it examines the betrayals of Dewey's most cherished ideas, the slow disappearance of purpose from the work of teaching, and the strange fate of children raised in a culture that prefers efficiency to meaning. The book ends with a provocation. If the human teacher has grown too tired to carry Dewey's mission, perhaps an unsleeping, unbiased intelligence - the kind only recently arrived on our desktops - might finally realize what the classroom never could. But only if the student still wishes to be taught.Witty, mournful, and uncompromisingly honest, The Pointless Classroom is for readers who suspect that something has gone deeply wrong with the way we learn, and who are willing to look the problem in the face.Keywordsphilosophy of education, John Dewey, future of schooling, artificial intelligence and learning, purpose in education, critical pedagogy, modern culture.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A man moves to the forest to be left alone. The forest turns out to be fully staffed. Twenty-five years ago Boris Kriger drove north out of Toronto on a nice day, kept going until he got tired, and bought a house on a hill with six and a half acres of impassable bush. He had been in Toronto three days. He was looking for silence. What he found was a bear knocking at the back door, wolves killing a deer in the driveway, a doctor's receptionist with the hide of a mammoth, a school curriculum with clapping in it, a satellite technician who explained that the trees were in the way and had been since 1890, and a government inspector who could not close his file until he had looked inside a poodle. Unknown Canada is a book of comic essays about the country nobody puts in the brochure: the small towns north of the cottages, where the hotel rules once advised guests that revolver shots were not a cause for alarm, and where a century later everybody is much politer and almost nothing has changed. It is very funny. Occasionally, without warning, it isn't.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In March 1923, an eighteen-year-old medical student stood at the edge of a pond in Saxony and saw a duck that was not supposed to be there. The species had not been recorded in the region since 1845. The local ornithological club refused to believe him. He was made to travel to Berlin and submit to an interrogation by a man he had never met, who questioned him until he was satisfied, and only then was the duck permitted to exist. The student was Ernst Mayr. He would spend the next eighty-two years asking the same question that pond had put to him: who decides where one thing ends and another begins, and on what grounds Mayr gave the twentieth century its working definition of a species. He described twenty-six species of birds and four hundred and forty-five subspecies - and then spent decades explaining why such categories cannot bear the weight that biology, and later politics, kept piling onto them. He argued that natural selection acts on whole organisms rather than on tidy isolated genes, and said so to Richard Dawkins's face, politely, at length, and without moving an inch. He traced scientific racism not to data but to a habit of thought. He popularised the word teleonomy so that biologists could speak of purpose without smuggling in a purposer. He lived to a hundred, published fourteen of his twenty-five books after the age of sixty-five, and was still writing when the century that he had helped explain was safely over. This book tells his life and takes his central problem seriously. A species, it argues, is best understood the way a topologist understands a shape: not as an object with an essence, but as a structure that persists - a connected region of gene flow that holds together for a long time and then, sometimes, comes apart. Boundaries in nature are real without being sharp, and the sharpness is ours. What looks like design is what persistence looks like from the inside.KEYWORDS Ernst Mayr biological species concept evolutionary synthesisSpeciation population thinking teleonomy philosophy of biology.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Anything that has lasted long enough for us to study it almost always looks as though it had been going somewhere. Species toward complexity, languages toward order, institutions toward sensible design, texts toward their final form. The monograph explains where that impression comes from, and shows that a large part of it arises not in the world but in the fact that we are looking at survivors. The core idea is simple. When we study something that has lasted, we are not studying the ordinary course of events but the course of events given that it did not end. That condition changes the picture: the process acquires a visible movement away from destruction even when no movement was there. The size of this manufactured tendency can be computed exactly. It is larger the closer a system came to disappearing and the more erratically it behaved, and nearly invisible where nothing was ever at risk.Several consequences follow, and they can be tested rather than merely asserted. The past shifts depending on where the observer stopped. Two historians with the same sources, carrying the story to different end dates, will find different tendencies at work in the same century - and each will be right about their own data. In the calculations that discrepancy came to sixteen standard errors.Inside a surviving system, credit for its success is misassigned in a predictable direction. Conspicuous but minor parts get more of it than indispensable ones: what cannot be done without does not vary, and what does not vary is not noticed. And the strongest result. Natural selection turns out to be indistinguishable from sheer durability. A population under selection and a non-reproducing system with the right fragility produce exactly the same picture - not similar, but identical. The difference between the living and the non-living is real, but it lies in the count of failed attempts, which are usually gone. Hence an unexpected conclusion: going somewhere is cheap, and any filter can counterfeit it. What is expensive is staying in place against the noise, and that is what actually requires life. The practical upshot is not skepticism but triage: the book says where the correction matters, where it is small, and gives five ways to measure it.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - What if one life is simply not enough At thirty-five, Boris Kriger set out to live a thousand of them. He washed floors and wrapped the dead, escaped the claims of two armies, crossed countries and languages, built businesses, wrote books, studied medicine and cosmology, bought a house in a Norwegian forest, and declared war on Time itself. Twenty years later, he returns to the memoir of that restless younger man and answers him-sometimes with affection, sometimes with irony, and always with the hard-earned knowledge of what happened next. A Thousand Lives is a witty, candid, and deeply personal conversation between two versions of the same man: one convinced that everything can be conquered, and the other who has lived long enough to examine the cost. Together they explore ambition, poverty, money, love, creativity, depression, mortality, and the strange human hunger to become more than one person in a single lifetime. Both philosophical memoir and literary self-portrait, this is a book about refusing the life assigned to you-and discovering that even a thousand lives must ultimately be lived as one.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Few figures in the modern history of the Christian East have stirred as much devotion and as much suspicion as Father Alexander Men. A priest who labored in the long shadow of a hostile state, he opened the doors of the Church to a generation raised without it, and he was struck down on the road to the altar by an assassin who was never found. To some he is a missionary saint; to others a dangerous innovator. This book refuses both caricatures. The Price of Truth takes the controversy surrounding Father Men as the doorway into a larger and more enduring question: what does Christian unity actually mean, and what may never be surrendered in its pursuit Moving from the catacomb years of a persecuted Church to the heated parish disputes of our own day, it weighs the accusations leveled against Men with patience and historical honesty, and then turns to the deeper matters his legacy raises. What is true ecumenism, and how does it differ from the quiet dissolution of doctrine Why does the Orthodox Church insist on a precision that can rival the exactness of the sciences And why is the subtlest danger to the faith not the heretic outside the walls but the zealot within them, who mistakes his own bitterness for the defense of truth Written with clarity and conviction, and addressed to believer and seeker alike, this is a meditation on the inseparable bond between truth and humility, and on the providence that has carried the Church through its darkest passages without abandoning it.KEYWORDS Alexander Men, Orthodoxy, ecumenism, Christian unity, apostolic succession, missionary theology, Russian religious thought. …

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Decades after the colonial flags came down, the boats are still crossing the Mediterranean-only now they travel in the opposite direction. They are not warships. They are rafts, and the people aboard them are fleeing the very freedom that was promised to their grandparents with such fanfare. This book asks a single uncomfortable question: what if decolonization was a bluff Taking the prophecies of Frantz Fanon as its starting point and its recurring voice, this book traces how the promise of liberation curdled into a subtler, more total form of unfreedom. Fanon warned that a change of flag is not a change of fortune, that a national elite can simply inherit the master's whip, and that violence summoned as a cure has a habit of staying on as a disease. He was right, and then history went further than even he imagined.Moving boldly beyond Fanon-through the hidden colonies inside the great metropoles, through the severed hands of Leopold's Congo, through Deleuze and the fluid self, through an imagined France that never let Algeria go-the book builds toward a single disturbing conclusion. The old colonizer at least wanted his subjects alive, because a subject was a resource to be owned. The new politics of controlled chaos wants nothing of the kind. It arrives, it shatters whatever system was standing, it loots the wreckage, and it walks away. The human being, once a resource to be privatized, has become mere ballast-and worse, a destabilizing force in the shape of refugees nobody wants. That, the book argues, is more monstrous than conquest ever was.Written with a clear eye and an unsparing honesty, by turns wry and grave, this is a meditation on freedom, identity, and the long con of independence in a world that has learned to dominate without even bothering to govern.KEYWORDS decolonization, Frantz Fanon, postcolonialism, identity, controlled chaos, migration, freedom.…
