In den WarenkorbVolume I (all published) folio (38 x 28 cm.).With 40 hand-coloured plates (36 engraved, 4 lithographed) by S. Watts and Weddell after Chandler, heightened in gum arabic; fine contemporary green half morocco gilt, covers with L-shaped corners with multiple gilt fillets, flat spine with gilt geometric designs and floral tooling, marbled sides and edges, plates clean and fresh, a most attractive example. One of finest works on camellias, here in its most desirable state. Described by Wilfred Blunt as 'handsome and rare', with magnificent plates after the drawings of Alfred Chandler 'beautifully coloured with opaque pigments' (Dunthorne), the work was available in three issues: uncoloured, coloured, or -as in this example- coloured and highly finished with gum arabic. Chandler's drawings were mostly based on examples of camellia grown by at the nursery at Vauxhall run by his father. The Camellia was first introduced into Europe by Lord Petre in 1739, and the work includes Japanese, Chinese and English-bred varieties. Beautiful evergreen shrubs, sometimes growing into small trees, they are found in eastern and southern Asia, from the Himalayas east to Japan and Indonesia. The best known species, albeit not necessarily known consciously, is the Camellia sinensis, the tea plant, of major commercial importance because tea is made from its leaves. While the finest teas are produced by C. sinensis thanks to millennia of selective breeding of this species, many other camellias can be used to produce a similar beverage. For example, in some parts of Japan, tea made from C. sasanqua leaves is popular. Intended to be a two-volume work, the second volume was never published. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Folio, (14 5/8 x 10 3/4 in.; 37.2 x 27.3 cm). 40 fine engraved plates with original hand color (one or two marginal spots, occasional offsetting). Modern half black calf, marbled boards, the spine in six compartments separated by five raised bands, red morocco gilt lettering piece in one (over-opened at plate 18, rubbed). FIRST EDITION, DELUXE ISSUE. Volume one, all published. "HANDSOME AND RARE" (Blunt) and "BEAUTIFULLY COLORED WITH OPAQUE PIGMENTS" (Dunthorne). The handcolored engravings after Alfred Chandler's original drawings based on specimens from his father's nursery at Vauxhall. Each engraving is accompanied by descriptive text, including physical description, cultivation, and when the plant first appeared in England. Included are "five species of Camellia, sixteen varieties of Camellia Japonica, which have been imported from China, and nineteen selected from those which have been raised from seed in this country" ( Preface). This book "exists in three states, i.e. with uncoloured plates, coloured plates, and more highly finished coloured plates on large paper" (Sitwell), of which this is the large-paper deluxe edition. William Beattie Booth was recognized as a leading expert on Camellias, presenting a paper on the subject in two sessions of the Horticultural Society in London in 1829. Although membership in the Society largely consisted of the landed gentry, well-regarded gardeners on the estate were often granted the status of corresponding members. Booth is listed in the published papers as "Garden Clerk." The flowers pictured include: Single Red Camellia, Apple-blossomed Camellia, Oil-seed Camellia, Captain Rawes's Camellia, Lady Banks's Camellia, Palmer's Semi-double White Camellia, Double White Camellia, Anemone-flowered, or Waratah Camellia, Loddige's Red Camellia, Middlemist's Red Camellia, Mr. Kent's Camellia, Fringed Double White Camellia, Crimson Shell-flowered Camellia, Lady Hume's Blush Camellia, Myrtle-leaved Camellia, Red Paeony-flowered Camellia, Pompone Camellia, Double Red Camellia, Captain Rawes's variegated Waratah Camellia, Double-striped Camellia, Captain Welbank's Camellia, Single White Camellia, Mr. Aiton's Camellia, Hollyhock-flowered Camellia, White Anemone-flowered Camellia, Mr. Chandler's Camellia, Mr. Chandler's neat Camellia, Coral-coloured Camellia, Press's Eclipse Camellia, Mr. Chandler's Elegant Camellia, Mr. Young's Semi-double Red Camellia, Mr. Chandler's choice-flowered Camellia, Cluster-flowering Camellia, Splendid Camellia, Gray's Invincible Camellia, China Rose Camellia, Mr. Ross's Camellia, Mr. Allnut's Cammellia, Lady Wilton's Camellia, Mr. Wood's Camellia. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Gut bis sehr gut. 1. Auflage. London, John and Arthur Arch Cornhill 1831. XII, 40 num. Bll., S. 41-48. Folio. Grüner HLdr. d. Zt. (Halbledereinband der Zeit) mit goldgepräg. RTitel. - Erste Ausgabe. - Dunthorne 77. - Great Flower Books (1990), S. 80. - Nissen BBI 209. - Stafleu & Cowan 651. - Unvollständige Ausgabe eine der schönsten Arbeiten von allen Werken über Kamelien (Camellia), hier vorliegend in der aufwendigsten und begehrenswertesten Ausgabe, mit "very fine large plates, beautifully coloured with opaque pigments" (Dunthorne). "Handsome and rare" (Blunt). - Die Ausgabe ist in drei Varianten erschienen: "with uncoloured plates, coloured plates, and more highly finished coloured plates on large paper" (Great Flower Books). (S. 41-48). - Bedauerlicherweise fehlen 8 Tafeln: Nr. 4 (Camellia Reticulata), 12 (Japonica Variegata), 19 (Jap. Paeoniflora Rosea), 20 (Jap. Althaeaflora), 21 (Jap. Anemoniflora Alba.), 26 (Jap. Elegans), 32 (Jap. - *** 93 Jahre Antiquariat Arno Adler ***.

CHANDLER, Alfred (illustrator). . Illustrations and Descriptions of the Plants which Compose the Natural Order Camellieæ, and the Varieties of Camellia Japonica, Cultivated in the Gardens of Great Britain. This book "exists in three states, i.e. with uncoloured plates, coloured plates, and more highly finished coloured plates on large paper." (Sitwell). With forty beautiful hand-colored plates heightend in gum Arabic (thirty-six of which are engravings and four of which are lithographs, all by Chandler). Folio (14 7/8 x 10 3/4 inches; 378 x 273 mm). xii, [40 leaves], 41-48 pp. With tissue guard and a leaf of text for each plate. Pages 41-48 include instructions for the "Propagation and Culture." A presentation copy, signed by Booth on the title-page. Contemporary half black morocco over brown cloth. Gilt lettering on spine. Red endpapers. Cloth a bit sunned and with some staining and rubbing. Old ink gift inscription on title-page. A few instances of residue from the tissue guards being adhered in small flecks to the gum Arabic of the occasional plate. Overall an extremely beautiful color-plate book with very vivid and bright examples of beautiful camellias. "In the 'Horticultural Society's Transactions' for 1830, Mr. William Beattie Booth A.L.S., Garden Clerk to the Society, contributed a descriptive list of the Camellias then known, naming twenty-five varieties and the same writer furnished the descriptions for the admirable illustrations of Camellias by Mr Alfred Chandler issued between 1830 and 1832. This forms a valuable work in one volume containing forty accurately drawn and coloured representations of the best Camellias known." (Journal of Horticulture and Practical Gardening, Volume 16). "In 1942 six parts of Vol. 2 part 1, containing pls. 41-44, dated '1837', were found among books belonging to a descendent of the Chandler family but seem to never have been published." (Sitwell 80).
