Papyrus manuscript, two unjoined fragments from the lower portion of a scroll. Part A: 16 x 91 cm (written area approx. 14 x 91 cm), preserving 43 vertical columns; Part B: 14 x 34.3 cm (written area approx. 13 x 34 cm), preserving 12 vertical columns. Middle Egyptian in cursive hieroglyphs in black and red ink, with polychrome painted vignettes in red, black, white, yellow, and blue. Mounted and framed. An exceptionally substantial part of a named 18th Dynasty Book of the Dead, preserving the Judgment of the Dead and some of the most important passages of Egyptian funerary belief. Made for Minherkhetiu in the 15th century BCE, these two richly painted sections encompass judgment, transformation, passage through the guarded gates of the netherworld, and solar regeneration. They form major surviving portions of a dispersed but partially reconstructable funerary roll, with related fragments preserved in Cairo and Syracuse, and rank among the largest and most visually compelling remains of Minherkhetiu's manuscript. - The preserved text carries Minherkhetiu through some of the central operations of the Egyptian afterlife. Part A contains the close of Spell 125C with the Judgment of the Dead, followed by Spell 81A for transformation into a lotus and Spell 144 with the guardians of the gates; Part B opens with an extract from 125A used as a caption to an adoration scene, continues with 136A and the vignette associated with 136B, and ends with 149C, one of the mapped regions of the netherworld. The sequence joins moral vindication, transformation, protected passage, and solar regeneration within a single surviving programme. - The judgment vignette is the visual centrepiece. Minherkhetiu, wearing a white kilt and heart amulet, is presented beside Anubis while the heart is balanced against Maat; notably, Horus rather than the more usual Thoth appears as master of the scales, an arrangement attested elsewhere in the 18th Dynasty. Elsewhere survive the armed gate guardians, an adoration scene with the owner and a woman probably representing his wife, the solar bark with udjat eyes and the falcon-headed sun god, the lotus stem, and part of the vignette to Spell 149. - The manuscript also preserves unusually instructive evidence of workshop practice. The text runs in retrograde vertical columns divided by black rules, with double rules marking spell divisions and selected headings and liturgical phrases rubricated in red. Lüscher observed that the owner's name was inserted into spaces deliberately left blank and that the vignettes may have been planned before the final text, while compressed signs at the ends of columns show the scribe adjusting his copy to the available field. The roll was therefore at least partly prepared in advance and subsequently personalised for Minherkhetiu and members of his family. - Minherkhetiu's relatively uncommon theophoric name invokes the god Min, and Lüscher connects its form with the cultic geography of Koptos, Akhmim and Abydos. His unusual title "ibw-nswt n 3s.t" has conventionally been rendered as "royal sandal-maker of Isis", although Lüscher notes that the office may have embraced leatherwork more broadly and that the qualification "of Isis" is better understood within a temple administrative or ritual setting. This cultic association lends some plausibility to the traditional Abydos provenance, though Lüscher rightly notes that the Cairo fragments had also been associated with Saqqara and that neither reported findspot is securely documented. - The roll belongs to the formative 18th Dynasty flowering of the illustrated Book of the Dead on papyrus, when the conjunction of text and image became a principal vehicle for elite funerary preparation. Its vignettes do not merely ornament the spells: they stage the deceased's vindication, transformation, passage through guarded space, and participation in the solar cycle, making the surviving sections a concentrated witness both to New Kingdom funerary theology and to the early history of the illustrated book. - Munro first published the related Cairo fragments as JE 95704; Lüscher subsequently demonstrated that the Schøyen sections belonged to the same original roll. The present two pieces, among the most extensive surviving portions, thus retain both considerable visual power and exceptional documentary value for the reconstruction of Minherkhetiu's lost manuscript. - Both fragments preserve the lower register of the original scroll, with irregular margins and local losses and splits in the papyrus. The support has darkened to a warm reddish-brown tone, while the black and red text and the polychrome pigments remain markedly legible and retain substantial definition.
