Hardcover with dustjacket. Zustand: Sehr gut. Auflage: New. 256 p. , lots of ill. Very slightly discolored, otherwise very good. - THE GLORY OF STEAM 1948-68 -- It was the sight of a steam locomotive in action that drew so many people into the railway enthusiast community. Lifetimes of devotion to railways resulted from encounters with steam engines; such was the impression of power, of aesthetic form, and of sound engineering. Indeed, surely the steam locomotive represented the ultimate combination in one machine of the art and Science of mechanical engineering. -- That this was so, is clear because the steam railway engine epitomised the old adage: Tf it looks right, it is right!' History has many instances where the ugly performed less well than the handsome. Compare the performance of the ill-proportioned 'A2' Pacific with the 'A3' or 'A4'; the 'Aberdare' with the '43XX'; the LMS '2P' with a 'T9'; the LNER 'LI' with a BR 2-6-4T. Even so, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, a cliche that was never so true as when applied to steam traction. Controversy rages still over the appearance of Bulleid's 'Ql' 0-6-0, thought by some to be ugly and by others to have a certain plain attractiveness. Many have affection for the simple form of the LNER 'Bl' 4-6-0. -- How eise can one explain the almost universal adoration of all things Great Western? The GW's fleet of engines lacked visual variety and was technically 'safe' rather than up-to-date, but their embellishment with copper and brass decorations set them on pedestals in many men's hearts. Yet the LNER Gresley Pacifics had set new Standards in performance as a result of that great engineer's humble acceptance that Chapelon of France could teach a few things, and the LMS pushed ahead with technical developments which extended intervals between repairs and reduced running costs. And even the relatively small Southern Railway had gone further with devices such as steel fireboxes and electric lighting on its technically extraordinary Pacifics. -- So steam's glory is expressed in many ways according to one's point of view. It could be the sight of a streamlined 'A4' streaking across the flat Yorkshire plain, or the sound of a 'Duchess' pounding up Camden bank. Maybe the piercing whistle of an LNER 2-6-0 echoing around the mountains near Glenfinnan struck the -- imagination. Perhaps one was stirred by the steady grind of a 'WD' 2-8-0 hauling stone away from the -- Derbyshire Peak District, or by the towering billow of steam and smoke that exploded from a Bulleid Pacific as it lost its feet on trying to Start its train. -- There were, however, those to whom steam engines were less than glorious beasts. Have you ever had to fire a leaky 'Hl5' 4-6-0 on a heavy Feltham freight in coldest winter? Have your face, eyes, hair, hands, indeed most of you, emerged soot black from a smokebox after cleaning choked boiler fire tubes? Was it your back which ached after lying in a Bulleid 4-6-2's oil bath while you angled yourself to insert the circlips that kept the Chain driven valve gear's pins in place? Could you have lived in a house opposite a large engine shed and breathed the smoke-laden atmosphere which blew across from the host of engines being lit up on a Sunday evening ready for next day's Services? Or do you, as a passenger, remember that in early British Railways days we did not wear our best clothes when travelling, for fear of getting them marked with the coal dust that penetrated the rolling stock of those years? -- Most of us look back in nostalgia, through rose-tinted spectacles, fondly recalling the good moments: the sparkle of Brunswick green paint, the brilliant white steam cloud, the majestic driving wheels, the proud nameplates bearing names of grandeur, the clang of the shovel in the firehole door, the hiss of the steam sanders, the steady acceleration of the deep exhaust beats as the train pulled away. All these are evocative reminders of the giants of steam. -- This album is more than a collection of superb pictures journeying into nostalgia. Its chapters trace the path of steam's history during the turbulent first 20 years of the nationalised British Railways. In its pages, discussion ranges over the early decision to build large numbers of new steam locomotives; the success of the Standard designs; improvements made to older types. Then the years of change are described, leading to steam's disappearance from the tracks. -- If readers can recall their favourite types, remember their happiest journeys, or just wallow in pleasant memories while turning over these pages, this book will have succeeded as a memento of steam's glory.
