Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. 1st Edition. xii, 514, [2] pages. Illustrations. A revealing biography of the man who shaped modern art into what it is today probes the excesses, contradictions, and often shocking lifestyle of Andy Warhol. Robert Colaciello (born May 8, 1947), known professionally as Bob Colacello, is an American writer. He is best known for his work with Interview magazine, where he served as the editor during the 1970s and early 1980s, helping transform it from a film publication into a magazine focused on popular culture. A close associate of Pop artist Andy Warhol, Colacello documented his social life and collaborated with him on the books The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (1975) and Exposures (1979). He later became a longtime contributor to Vanity Fair, and has published books including Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close Up (1990) and Ronnie and Nancy: Their Path to the White House, 1911-1980 (2004). His photography has also been exhibited and published. Derived from a Kirkus review: From the former editor of Warhol's Interview magazine, a gutsy, gripping portrait of "The Pope of Pop Art." Colacello went to work for the artist in 1970 and for the next 13 years spent almost every waking hour in his company and that of the superstars and sycophants, the drugged and demented who formed Warhol's entourage. Colacello kept a detailed journal that he now draws on to produce a work of startling immediacy and convincing honesty. And as clearly as he captures those glitzy, gritty years, Colacello is even sharper in tracing his enigmatic subject's psyche. In sometimes shocking, sometimes hilarious, detail, Colacello recounts instances of Warhol's manipulations, hypochrondia, seeming asexuality, voyeurism, and obsession for collecting. With a sharp eye and a compassionate heart, the author dots his text with memorable portraits: of jewel-bedecked Paulette Goddard, of pontifical Diana Vreeland, of megalomaniacal Salvador Dali. Equally intriguing are sketches of such 15-minute celebrities as Candy Darling and Holly Woodlawn, the transvestite stars of some of Wathol's more outrageous movies. Crisply written, well-organized, Colacello's is a first-rate, sweeping memoir of an astonishing cultural phenomenon. Andy Warhol (born Andrew Warhola Jr.; August 6, 1928 - February 22, 1987) was an American artist and filmmaker. Widely regarded as the most important artist of the second half of the 20th century, Warhol's practice spanned various media, including painting, filmmaking, photography, publishing, and performance art. A leading figure in the Pop art movement, his work explores the relationship between advertising, consumerism, mass media, and celebrity culture. His embrace of mechanical reproduction challenged traditional boundaries between high and low culture. He is also credited with popularizing the expression "15 minutes of fame." Born to working-class Rusyn immigrant parents in Pittsburgh, Warhol began his career as a commercial artist in New York before transitioning to fine art. Among his best-known early silkscreen paintings are Campbell's Soup Can (1962), Marilyn Diptych (1962), and Coca-Cola (1962). In the mid-1960s, Warhol began devoting his attention to creating experimental films such as Blow Job (1964) and Empire (1965). He subsequently directed a number of underground films-including Chelsea Girls (1966), Four Stars (1967), and Blue Movie (1969)-featuring a shifting group of personalities known as Warhol superstars. His studio, the Factory, became a hub for avant-garde experimentation, bringing together drag queens, poets, bohemians, musicians, and wealthy patrons. Warhol also managed the influential rock band the Velvet Underground, who performed at his Exploding Plastic Inevitable (1966-67) multimedia events. After Warhol survived an assassination attempt in 1968, the Factory evolved into a business enterprise. He founded Interview magazine, produced the play Pork (1971), and published various books such as The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (1975) and Popism. Sam Bolton (front jacket photograph) and Annie Lei (illustrator). Signed.…
