It also was in charge of criminal prosecution and review of court decisions, with the right to file protests (procuracy protests) against verdicts or sentences that violated the law.These formal legal objections challenged court judgments and administrative decisions deemed to violate Soviet law. Spanning the Great Terror, the late Stalin era, Khrushchev's 'thaw', and the Brezhnev period, the documents illuminate the official role of the Procuracy as guardian of 'socialist legality'.
