Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 383-402. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by Jan Bremmer. - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: The small collection of notes on some of the Acta Martyrum, published in this journal (Vig.Chr. 35, 1981, 43-56) has received the kind attention of scholars. This has encouraged us to present a second series of notiunculae, in which other passages are dealt with. We follow the order of Musurillos edition. Martyrium Carpi 17. In the paragraphs 9-20 of the Greek version of these Acta Carpus in answer to the proconsuls invitation to offer sacrifice to the gods polemically expounds a condensed version of a full-scale Christian theory about the pagan gods. The Latin recension only has the equivalent of some statements at the beginning of the Greek passage in question. It indeed seems rather unlikely that a Roman governor would have allowed any extensive exposition of ideas so insulting to official Roman religion. Be that as it may, a thorough examination of the exposition as such might provide a clue as to the date of the Greek document, without of course proving anything about the time of the passion itself. - Wikipedia: Jan N. Bremmer (born 18 December 1944) is a Dutch academic and historian. He served as a professor of Religious Studies and Theology at the University of Groningen. He specializes in history of ancient religion, especially ancient Greek religion and early Christianity. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Brill, Leiden (.), 1999. XIII,278p. Original blue gilt stamped cloth with wrps. Corner cut from free endpaper. Else fine. ?The fourteen essays in this volume - in English, German and French - were originally presented as papers at a conference organized by the Dutch Foundation for Early Christian Studies in March 1996. As a conference volume, the book exhibits the usual characteristics of the genre. Some essays are quite technical, while others um up the scholarship of the last few decades on a particular topic. (?) There is much learning exhibited in the essays, and several of them provide useful guides to the ?state of the discussion? about particular topics. (?) Overall, the editors seem to show how Christianity?s notion of ?divine revelation? distinguished Christina interpretation from the interpretation of the so-called pagan classics. A. Hilhorst?s opening essay provides a brief overview of biblical scholarship in the early church and is noteworthy for addressing some less well known texts (?). Several essays are devoted to showing how Scripture was used to rationalize/justify various aspects of church life (?). Three of the essays (?) focus on various aspects of early Christian art. A few essays link particular patristic texts with events of the day (?). One essay constitutes a word study (?). The influence of pagan rhetoric and literature on early Christian texts is explored in I. Sluiter?s discussion of the role of the ?entertainment factor? in Augustine?s advice to Christin teachers in ?De doctrine Christiana? and in G. Partoens?s exploration pof how pagan literary/philosophical imagery is mixed with the interpretation of the New Testament Parable of the Sower in Prudentius?s ?Book Against Symmachus?.? (ELIZABETH A. CLARK in Church History, 2000, p.636).
