Softcover. Zustand: Fair. No Jacket. 131 pages (complete). An inconsiderately stored copy of this anthology of science fiction stories. This issue was the first of two to be published in 1970 and reprinted stories from the original title-series in the 1930s and 1940s. The covers are much worn all about. The spine has been repaired with brown packing tape. The covers are creased, marked but still resonant. They are secure and sure. The contents are tanned from paper quality, they have some short wear to the edges. However, the pages are also clean, clear, amenable, congenial, agreeably tidy. fk. Softcover. Zustand: Good. Magazine. "When New York Vanished" illustrated by Alex Schomburg. Quarto. Illustrated wrappers. Typical wear to yapped edges with chips and a few long tears (affecting a bit of text), stain on the cover and first page with small stains at the bottom margin of several pages, external tape repair on the cover, good only. Features: The first appearance of "When New York Vanished" by Henry Kuttner, "The Phantom Teleview" by Bob Olsen, and the first appearances of "Station Death" by Oscar J. Friend, and "Guinea Pig, Ph.D." by Alfred Bester. Stan Lee once praised illustrator Schomburg stating, "Alex Schomburg was totally unique. I remember hearing Timely Comics publisher Martin Goodman tell me time and again how great a cover illustrator Alex was, and how he wished we had more like him. He was the only artist I knew able to combine strong, dramatic layouts, and exciting superhero action with a simplistic, almost cartoony style of execution.".

Many of the early students also brought their slaves to the college with them. Upon Emancipation some of the African Americans of the community--mostly women--stayed on as servants, forming what is now called the Hollins Community. Although the servants played an integral part in the college's success, students were strongly discouraged from acknowledging them as people. Rules forbidding any 'familiarity' with the servants perpetuated a prejudicial attitude toward the African American community that would persist well into the 1940s. Determined to give voice to the African American community that served as the silent workforce for Hollins College, Ethel Morgan Smith [herself a graduate of Hollis College] succeeded in finding individuals to step forward and tell their stories."--jacket ; VG/VG.
