Though born Jewish and converted to Calvinism he was an ardent opponent of the antisemitic policies of the Tsarist government and sympathized with Zionism. His exhaustive work on the technical, economic and political aspects of war and his untiring crusade for peace has gained him the nickname the father of contemporary pacifism'.
