With many illustrations (several in colours). 304 pp. Dejean became city surgeon of Batavia and returned to Europe as a wealthy man after ten years of employment. He studied medicine and chemistry in Leiden and traveled extensively through Europe. With his sharp observations he gave a painful picture of the state of medicine in the 18th century.
