In den WarenkorbZustand: Very good. Surrey, April 9, 1984., 1984. Very good. - Over 152 words typed on 11-3/4 inch high by 8-1/4 inch wide "Gretta Barrow/Edmund Reid Piano/Violin Duo" stationery. In his letter, written from Surrey, England, classical violinist Edmund Reid writes that he and his wife "have been performing as a Piano/Violin duo"…and have performed in all of London's major concert halls since their "debut at Wigmore Hall in 1978". Having "recently returned from a highly successful tour of the Caribbean. We are now looking for an opportunity to perform in the States and have been informed you might be able to assist." Signed in full "Edmund Reid". In a postscript, he writes that he will be in New York "with the English National Opera when they are performing at the Met. from 28th - 30th June. Perhaps I could come and see you then?" Folded twice for mailing with a paperclip stain at top and Jean Dalrymple's annotation "File 'P' (Pianist) May 14, '84" at the top and her check mark across the text. Very good. Together with a 4-page 8-1/4 inch high by 5-7/8 inch wide brochure distributed by Tom Higgins Management promoting the duo with brief biographies and a portrait of the duo on the cover page. The brochure is folded vertically for mailing. The Jamaican-born black violinist Edmund Reid (1936-2021) was, throughout his career, one of the few black musicians in UK orchestras. He performed his first recital at the age of 8 and studied at the Royal Academy of Music. He performed with the United Kingdom's major orchestras though had to stand up against prejudice. Sir Georg Solti and a committee took two months considering his appointment as to 'whether it was OK to employ a black man". He later won a lawsuit against the English National Opera who had not offered him the title of co-leader despite his acting in the role for 2 years. He frequently encountered signs denying admission to "blacks" when on tour. He performed Piano & Violin duo recitals at Wigmore Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall with his Trinidad-born wife Gretta Barrow. The recipient, Jean Dalrymple (1902-1998) was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville, appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing, the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski, Mary Martin, Jos Iturbi, Andre Kostalanetz, Nathan Milstein, and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943, serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951, Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder, commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world. RARE.
