From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Binding slightly bumped, light margins, paper browned, otherwise clean. - From the text: It was, I believe, in 1896 that I became a member of the distinguished professional group known to librarians everywhere by the initials A.L.A., but to others as the American Library Association. It was owing to Dr. G. E. Wire that I joined in advance of the Cleveland conference of 1896, with the "serial number" 1435, and I have always been peculiarly grateful to him for insisting that I become a member. The A.L.A. was only twenty years old when I joined. It was a very simple organizationno paid officers or staff, a complete absence of formality about its meetings, and a real and sincere discussion of issues raised at them. I still recall the gale of laughter that at one of the meetings at Cleveland greeted the opening words of Mr. Wing, of Scribner's, "I have read a great many bad books." It was some minutes before he could go on to add, "But the Damnation of Theron Ware is the worst of the lot." It was his sincere manner rather than his words which caused the laughter. Real discussion marked the meetings, in sad contrast to the present day when some five thousand is not an unusual attendance.
