Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 366 pages 20 cm ; ISBN 9783930969708, 393096970X OCLC 421798 ; red, black and white pictorial stiff paper wrappers ; Penned by Bishop Otto of Freising, Frederick Barbarossa's maternal uncle, this work covers the first eight years of Frederick's reign as Holy Roman Emperor ; "The Deeds of Frederick… Barbarossa" is the "official biography" of German king and Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I. This historical firsthand account was begun by his maternal uncle, Bishop Otto of Freising, the leading medieval church figure and notable historian, and continued by a less well known cleric, Rahewin. This chronicle is the single most important source for the early reign of Frederick Barbarossa and the most valuable biographical study to come out of the twelfth century. In a letter written to his uncle, Frederick recounted his life and the principal events of his reign. The first of the four books that constitute this account were written by Otto and cover events from 1075 to 1152, from the reign of Henry IV through that of Conrad III. The second book draws heavily on the letter, providing invaluable insight into Frederick's attempts to establish and consolidate the Hohenstaufen empire. The final two books, written by Rahewin, follow the emperor's reign through 1160, during which time Frederick restored order at home, recovered imperial control of Burgundy, and re-created an imperial party in Italy ; Charles Christopher Mierow was a professor of biography at Carleton College. He also translated The Two Cities by Otto of Freising. ; bookplate of George Peddy Cuttino (1914-1991) who taught at Emory for 32 years and was a distinguished and beloved professor and author. He was a two-time Guggenheim Fellowship recipient and he chaired the Emory history department in the early 1970's. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War I and worked for the U.S. Army Intelligence Service at the Pentagon during the Korean Conflict. He received a Bachelor's degree at Swarthmore College and a Master's degree at the University of Iowa. In 1938, he received a doctor of philosophy degree from Oxford University, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. He received the Emory Medal in 1982. ; VG. Book.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The Two Cities; A Chronicle of Universal History to the Year 1146 A.D.' is a monumental work of medieval historiography and philosophy. Written by Otto I, Bishop of Freising, one of the most distinguished historians of the Middle Ages, this chronicle attempts to synthesize the entirety of hu…man history within a profound theological framework. Drawing heavy inspiration from St. Augustine's 'The City of God,' the work traces the parallel development of the civitas Dei (the heavenly city) and the civitas terrena (the earthly city) from the dawn of creation through the mid-twelfth century.Otto of Freising provides a unique perspective as both a high-ranking churchman and a relative of the Hohenstaufen emperors. His narrative offers invaluable insights into the political and religious tensions of the Holy Roman Empire, the Investiture Controversy, and the intellectual climate of the 12th-century Renaissance. The chronicle is more than a mere record of events; it is a sophisticated meditation on the cyclical nature of empires and the ultimate destiny of mankind. This work remains a cornerstone for scholars of medieval history, offering a rare glimpse into how the medieval mind understood its place in the grand trajectory of time and divine providence. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. The Two Cities was his masterwork, spanning in time from Adam and Eve to the coming of the last days -- which he believed had actually begun. In form and philosophy, it stands as a landmark in medieval h…istoriography. As a brother of the Emperor, Otto had an insider's view on the significant events of his day, including the Investiture Controversy and the Second Crusade. His book records how one man grasped for hope as he felt the world dissolving around him.
