Zustand: FINE. First printing. From the front flap: "Ballantine, his wife and three of their teen-aged children traveled throughout eight Rocky Mountain states: Wyoming, Colorado, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. [This book] is an offbeat and highly personal (and a bit impertinent) look at the vacation places and tourist centers within these states, both well known and obscure, and at Americans at large, both tourist and native." Starting at Frontier Days in Cheyenne to the Sioux Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, from mining towns like Cripple Creek and Leadville in Colorado to visiting artist Georgia O'Keefe in New Mexico, this is a combination of interviews, and reporting on the West, illustrated with photographs (including one of O'Keefe) by the author. Note at the beginning of the book states that the trip was made in a 'Goldline pickup camper, Model 220, manufactured by Travel Industries, Inc, Oswego, Kansas and mounted on a Ford Motor Co. camper special.' 303 pp. Fine in near fine dust jacket (chipping to upper edge of dj spine, slight sunning to spine.).

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Illustrated orange paper over boards, with black and white workmen on both front and back cover. This copy is just back to us from the conservation lab where a new spine has been added, with orange cloth (a very good match for the original and much more durable) has been added, and laid underneath the original on the boards, except where there were some tears. Otherwise all original and all tight. Corners bumped. A red crayon squiggle on the front endpaper. No date anywhere (but it appears only to have been published once). Unpaginated. A scarce Margaret Wise Brown title published under a pseudonym. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it's an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book (although sometimes they do get it right).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good dj. Illustrated by Bill Ballantine (illustrator). Unstated ed. (price-clipped) [lower corners bumped with slight exposure of boards, a little damage to both ends of spine; the jacket is heavily worn along the spine, with bits of paper loss at both ends, a few other small edge-chips]. (cartoon drawings with colored highlights) An ode to the "Fix-It Men" -- the plumbers, telephone linemen, road repair crews, carpenters, steamroller drivers -- who keep our infrastructure together (although I'm sure nobody called it that in 1946). Wonderful cartoon-y illustrations by Ballantine; one of his harder-to-find titles.

Zustand: Very good. First edition of this rare Margaret Wise Brown pseudonymous title, inscribed by illustrator Bill Ballantine, who he gave up his career to join the circus in 1947. Publisher William R. Scott was a small business owned by a couple who lived on a farm in Vermont; they used their barn as their book warehouse. Brown became their editor and principal writer in 1938. Despite receiving payments and royalties below the industry standard, Brown worked with them for years because she believed in their innovative approach to creative education books which are now highly sought by collectors. This book shows what "fix-it men" do underneath the streets and in the air, with jolly illustrations by Ballantine. The same year this book was published, Ballatine traveled on assignment with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The next year, he quit publishing and literally ran away to the circus, becoming a professional clown. 9.5'' x 7.75''. Original orange pictorial boards. Illustrated in color by Ballantine. [40] pages. Inscribed by Ballantine on verso of title page: "For J. Dugan / who is always there / Bill Ballantine." A bit of soiling and a few marginal closed tears to leaves. Corners worn; chipping with loss to spine, carefully repaired.
