About the book >.>.> This preface attempts to provide a historical background to the present Clackmannanshire Atlas by pointing out some of the ways in which bird records were produced and discussed from the late 18th century and through the Victorian era and the 20th century. Some examples of particular species are mentioned to illustrate where well based comparisons can be made and also when the data are too thin or open to ambiguous interpretations. The first attempts to provide systematic and locally based accounts of Scottish birds occur in the two Statistical Accounts of Scotland where church ministers produced surveys of their parishes, the first in 1791-1799 (often referred to as the Old SAS) and then a follow up (the New SAS) in 1834-1835. Unfortunately few of the local ministers had a personal interest in natural history or contacts with parishioners who did. For Alloa, in the Old SAS, on the Inches are noted "great quantities of wild ducks, Teal, Wigeon, gulls. Sometimes Cormorants and Goosanders. Stormy Petrels last year".…
