RARE ORIGINAL ART . *** **** *** . . . AN EARLY 19TH CENTURY PAINTED ALBUM . . . WITH FIVE LOVELY COLOR PAINTINGS . . *** The paintings are done in a delicate but firm hand: 1. LANDSCAPE, painted by Ma. The introduction is signed and sealed by Cai Yunhua. . 2. Four ladies and a peacock, unsigned . 3. Three ladies cooking outside, unsigned . 4. Three ladies with a goat cart moving art goods. . 5. Pine trees and mountain landscape . *** . The afterward is signed by a gentry [shi ji] named MA Shizhe . . Author's name may be Yao Guogan. . *** CONDITION: The album contents: . The album is in the original period brocade brown silk front cover, with blue silk back cover. The covers, edges and corners are well rubbed, the boards split but mended closed, the covers have protected the contents as expected. . The contents consists of 13 double-pages in all. The first 2 pages of title are Zhú Shua Tòngku [bamboo brush painted] on gold-flecked stiff boards. The next three double-pages of Shufa [calligraphy] are on fine white silk, the last page with blue silk border mounting. . The following five color paintings are all on fine white silk with blue silk border mountings. . The six double-page descriptive Shufa [calligraphy] texts addresses the paintings. These are all the same fine white silk, with blue silk border mountings. . All in all there are thirteen double-page fine white silk covered pages with blue border mountings, plus the first two gold-flecked stiff boards. . Each with blue-white silk background: 5 double-page Caise Huihua [color paintings] and 8 double-pages of Shufa [calligraphy]. Each double page is 17.3 x 32.8 cm. Each page has a blue silk border mounting. . *** CONDITION: The Binding: The book is accordion folded, with the original brown silk brocade cloth covers and brushed title slip. . The front and rear covers and their edges and corners are well rubbed, the original cardboard showing through, a bit dusty, with mended splits to the boards. The work is now for the most part solid and firm. The binding protected the contents for over 220 years. As expected there will be some attrition rate on the binding and contents. . The hinges on the back side of most pages have been reinforced with hand-made period mulberry paper and rice glue at some previous period. The page hinges are now solid and firm. . Condition: The Paintings: The color paintings are painted upon very high quality thick white silk, laid down on the page boards. Then blue silk mounting borders also laid down over the painting in traditional Chinese style mountings. Some of the border blue silk has been reinforced, each page painting is firm and solid. . *** NOTE: Please carefully review photos posted to our website. . *** THE FIVE PAINTINGS: There are five paintings: 1. Landscape is very clean and in excellent condition. . 2. Four Chinese ladies & a peacock. The right half of the paintings is very clean with a couple mild small discolorations. The left side has two damp blotches one each on the two women's upper portion. . 3. Showing an elegant lady and her daughter, with a serving maid girl in an out door scenery. This work is by and large clean. There are a few very small, minor dotted marks in the left upper area which do not detract, and a couple of feint discolorations on the right edge of the right side painting. . 4. Two elegant ladies look at a girl who holds a goat pulling a small cart in a scenic background out doors. The painting is by and large clean. There re a couple of feint small marks on the left upper area which do not detract, and a few dark tiny spots at the lower area of the right side painting. . 5. The last painting is of two ancient pine trees and mountain landscape. By and large this painting is clean, with a very few feint tiny dark spots in the upper right sky area and the lower edge is somewhat dusty. . By and large this is an excellent example with typical but minimal period dustiness, minor blemishes and discoloration as can be expected for a work of this age.
