Hardbound. Zustand: As New. New. Contents Prologue. 1. Introduction. 2. Working women in the informal sector the district profile. 3. Women as domestic workers. 4. Female labour participation in Bidi rolling. 5. A comparative study of female domestic and Bidi workers. 6. Concluding remarks and suggestions. Bibliography. Appendix. Informal sector is an important feature of the most of the developing nations of Africa Latin America and Asia. Women constitute a bulk in the large informal sector of the developing world. Naturally they represent the bulk of the informal sector labour supply. They work at a low wage rate less than what received by the male workers for the same work. Their job is insecure and thus unstable. They are generally restricted to low productivity and ill paid informal sector employment and experience higher dependency burdens. They are more likely to be poor and malnourished and less likely to get formal education health care or clean water and sanitation. This book gives an exposition of women engaged in informal sector activities. Two case studies of women workers engaged in domestic chores and bidi rolling activities have been made. A comparative study of female domestic and bidi workers has also been undertaken to attempt an economic model for valuation of domestic and bidi workers. 175 pp.

The first wave of globalisation was perhaps witnessed in 1870 and it continued up to 1914. The profound influence in driving globalisation came from technological innovation which in fact led to an explosion of productivity and reduction in transportation costs. But the wave came to an end by World War I. The second wave brought about from 1945 to 1980. This continued reducing transportation cost further which effectively fostered increased trade. The latest wave of globalisation began in 1980 is something different. It is distinctive in the sense that a large number of developing nations entered into the world market for selling their manufacturing goods. At the same time some other developing nations became increasingly marginalised in the world economy. 172 pp.

Hardbound. Zustand: As New. New. Contents Preface. 1. Introduction. 2. Development schemes for women. 3. Women and education. 4. Our village level study. 5. Rural women in reformed regime. 6. Conclusions and recommendations. Appendices. Bibliography. Index. Women constitute almost the half of the total world population who play a vital part in shaping society and economy. Women at large and rural women in particular work at a variety of tasks. They have little time for leisure but what is shameful is that they have little or no control over the productive resources. What is more they have little control over their own income or labour. The core of this book is empowering women through education and employment in a grass root economy. For our purpose we have given a description of various development schemes for the development of women during planning. An analysis on women and education has also been made. In order to understand the conditions of women in a backward rural economy we have presented here two case studies. An exposition of the condition of women has also been given. 175 pp.

Human rights are those rights which every individual in any society requires as a consequence of being human. The concept has become popular especially since the second world war although its existence can be traced back in ancient Greek and Roman thoughts. This concept has in fact replaced the term natural rights. The millennium development goals human development and human rights together share a common motivation that includes freedom equality solidarity tolerance respect for nature and shared responsibility. Achieving these goals will enlarge human rights. Each goal is connected to economic social and cultural rights counted in the Universal declaration of Human Rights (1948) and many other human rights instruments. Historically human rights have been classified in terms of three generations viz (i) civil and political rights (ii) economic social and cultural rights and (iii) solidarity rights. With the shifting of the focus of global political disputes from the rich and advanced industrialized nations to the poor less developed and developing countries questions regarding the relationship between poverty and oppression arise more frequently that require monitoring human rights for safeguarding the interests of disadvanced sections of the society including women. 212 pp.
