Bhat, worked in the public sector Corporation Bank from 1976 to 2009 and was a director on the board of the bank. He led Corporation Bank Officers' Organisation between 1981 and 2009 and was a senior office bearer of All India Bank Officers' Confederation from 1993 to 2009. With his intimate knowledge as an insider of the banking industry and in his capacity as the founder editor of the monthly journal of the officers' association he had been writing extensively on the reforms and the problems in the banking industry for 27 years.
