Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. In this series, a contemporary poet selects and introduces a poet of the past. By their choice of poems and by the personal and critical reactions they express in their prefaces, the editors offer insights into their own work as well as providing an accessible and passionate introduction to the most important poets in our literature. Sir John Betjeman (1906-1984) was born in Highgate, the son of a manufacturer of Dutch descent. After university he joined the staff of the Architectural Review, thereafter working as a journalist and, during the Second World War, for various government departments. His first book of poems was Mount Zion (1931), followed by numerous collections, notably A Few Late Chrysanthemeumns (1954). His poetry enjoyed immense popularity, as did his personality, and his knighthood in 1969 and appointment as Poet Laureate in 1972 were almost universally welcomed. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

14 + [1]pp, 8vo. Stapled eight-leaf pamphlet. Publishers' slug on reverse of final leaf. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Scarce: no copy at the British Library, and the only copy located on OCLC WorldCat at Princeton. A pleasing memento of a grand affair, attended by a host of dignitaries, including Princess Margaret, the Prince of Wales (who read the first lesson) and Betjeman's publisher John Murray (who read the second lesson). Two of Betjeman's poems are reproduced in the service: 'Trebetherick', read by the horse-racing commentator 'John Oaksey' [Lord Oaksey] (then married to Betjeman's former secretary); and 'South London Sketch, 1844', read by much-loved actress 'Miss Prunella Scales'.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. From the papers of Philip Dosse, proprietor of Hansom Books, publisher of a stable of seven arts magazines including Books and Bookmen and Plays and Players. See Death of a Bookman by the novelist Sally Emerson (editor of Books and Bookmen at the time of Dosse s suicide), in Standpoint magazine, October 2018; and Michael Barber, 'What was Books and Bookmen?', Literary Review blog, 18 August 2023. On one side of a 14 x 10 cm compliments slip in red ink, which has 'Sir JOHN BETJEMAN' at top left, and 'With Compliments' centred. At top left of the page Betjeman has typed 'Dear Mr Dosse - How nice of old Charles'. He adds a scarcely-legible Autograph Note of around twelve words in felt-tip pen, and also adds an accent (incorrectly) to the 'e' of 'Dosse'. The note would appear to end 'Many thanks. / Shaw herewith.' See Image.
