Em segundo, o crescente envolvimento dos africanos com o comércio externo e suas consequências. No Norte da África, os otomanos conquistam o Egito e estabelecem regências em Trípoli, em Túnis e em Argel. Ao sul do Saara, alguns dos maiores e mais antigos Estados entram em colapso (Songhai, no oeste do Sudão e Etiópia cristã), ao passo que emergem novas bases de poder (Asabte, Daomé, Sakalava) com estruturas político-administrativas altamente centralizadas e classes sociais distintas, muitas vezes com forte caráter feudal. As religiões tradicionais continuam a coexistir com o cristianismo, em declínio, e o islamismo, em ascensão.
