[circa 1638 - 1640 ], 4 ff., 435 pp. [ mal chiffré 535 ], 4 ff., 459 pp. [ avec 2 ff. chiffrés 59-60) Ce très fameux ouvrage fut tout d'abord publié à peu d'exemplaires, imprimé en secret au château de Sully par un Maximilien de Béthune (1559-1641) âgé et en disgrâce. Il s'agit ici de l'un des premières et des plus célèbres contrefaçons. Les deux feuillets de titre sont bien reconnaissables ornés des 3 "V" des 3 vertus théologales, peints en vert, surmontés de la couronne d'Amaranthe, peinte en vert et rouge. On peut lire en garde cette amusante note manuscrite ancienne, à l'encre : "Les Mémoires du Duc de Sully ont été imprimés en 2 vol. in fol. environ en 1649 ou 1650, mais cette édition a été fort chatrée par ordre de Mr le Prince qui donna 200 écus, afin qu'on ota ce qui y étoit contre la naissance de feu Mr. son père. Voy. Gui Patin lettre 34 in fin." Mais cette lettre de Guy Patin datant du 28 février 1650, ce denier évoquait plus probablement l'autre contrefaçon rouennaise parue sous la Fronde. Bon état (reliure frottée avec usures et anciennes restaurations en queue et tête, gardes volantes un peu faibles, de rouss., ex-libris ms. ancien "Thevenet") pour ce monument de l'Histoire de France, mais aussi de l'histoire de l'économie, ainsi que de l'édition. Each volume in brown half calf binding with blue paper boards. Edge of text block lightly flecked with red. Condition of each volume is GOOD+: Leather dry and flaking, spines heavily worn and soiled, covers heavily worn and soiled each with various small scuff marks and water spots, more worn at corners, corners bent. Top edge of text block darkened a few ink spots on edges, pages foxed, binding fine. Each volume has a small bookplate of David B. Ogden on inside of front cover and is inscribed by Ogden in ink in 1852 on title page. Vol. 1: missing leather label on spine, edges of covers highly abraded, ink spots on rear. Vol. 2- nick to edge of rear cover, top of spine heavily worn. Vol. 3- a few loose pages. Vol. 4- bottom of spine heavily worn, ink spots on cover. Vol. 5- nicks on spine, stain on rear cover, a few dog eared pages.

As finance minister in the reign of Henri IV, Sully introduced many reforms and removed many abuses of tax-collecting, managing to save between 1600 and 1610 an average of a million livres a year. Sully also served as grand commissioner of public works, superintendent of fortifications and grand master of artillery, in addition to being appointed governor of Mantes and of Jargau. He negotiated the treaty of peace in 1602 and the following year represented Henri at the court of James I of England.
