Earl of Ashburnham (1797-1878), die 1897 und 1898 in vier Teilauktionen bei `Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge` in London versteigert wurde und der Sammlungen des Malers und Mitbegründers des `Arts and Crafts Movement` William Morris (1834?1896). - Bertram of A. begann bereits während seines Studiums an der Westminster School zu Sammeln und folgte dieser Leidenschaft bis kurz vor seinem Tod. Seine Sammlung umfasste neben vielen anderen bibliophilen Kostbarkeiten auch zwei Exemplare der Gutenberg- oder Mazarine-Bibel (Los 436, ein Exemplar auf Pergament gedruckt), eine Biblia-Pauperum (Los 419) und die frühesten Ausgaben der ersten englischen Schriftsteller. Als die Familie zunehmend unter finanziellem Druck geriet, bot sie an, die Bibliothek einschließlich der Sammlung von illuminierten Manuskripten in den 1890er Jahren für 160.000 Pfund an die Nation zu verkaufen. Der Deal wurde nicht abgeschlossen, und die Bücher wurden in den nächsten Jahren stückweise für insgesamt 228.000 Pfund verkauft. Viele wurden von der British Library erworben. - ?Friends of Mr. Morris will always regret that no catalogue of his complete library was ever issued, as it would have illustrated, in a remarkable manner, the real genius in selection which enabled him, in a very short space of time, to bring together so many specimens of first-rate importance?
