These two works by Filippo Beroaldo (14531505) were first printed together in Bologna in 1497. He dedicated De optimo statu (On the ideal state) to the de facto ruler of Bologna, Giovanni Bentivoglio; other editions were entitled De optimo statu et de principe, preempting Machiavelli's choice of title for his own short work of political theory. However, Beroaldo provides what is essentially a list of princely virtues, in the manner of earlier specula principum; he concludes that a monarchy is the best form of government, where the monarch acts in the best interests of the state. Although they approached princely behaviour from different angles, it has been suggested that Machiavelli did indeed read Beroaldo's treatise, though he was more influenced in his other writings by Beroaldo's commentaries on Roman drama. These second Parisian editions, printed by Michel Tholoze for Roce, follow Kerver's editions of the previous year; they omit Beroaldo's preface, and the absence of a separate title-page for the second part perhaps indicates that the two were intended to be issued together. Roce published numerous short works by Beroaldo, for students at the university to pick and choose which ones to buy for their studies. The woodcuts are somewhat large and crude, perhaps more in the manner of a pilgrim badge than a book illustration. 'The blocks are cut with unusually strong lines, and the uneven edges suggest that these subjects may originally have been part of a larger block divided into panels' (Mortimer, p.71). They also seem somewhat incongruous, given the secular nature of the texts that they accompany. Uncommon: we have traced copies of both works in the British Library, Harvard, and the Newberry; the first work is also in Christ's College, Cambridge and the National Library of Medicine; the second is also held by the LSE. Según Baudrier, la edición hay que enmarcarla en la actividad de Balthazard de Gabiano y, por la composición y tipografía, la situó hacia 1506. Renouard, por su parte, sin asignarle fecha, indicó acertadamente que reproducía el texto de la edición de Faelli (incluido el prefacio) y no el texto de la de Manunzio, y que Manunzio nunca lo editó en octavo, por lo que esta que ofrecemos no se trataba de una contraedición ?página a página? Y, en fin, otros han señalado como impresor a Guillaume Huyon, pero ni este inició su trabajo para los Gabiano hasta después de la muerte de Balthazard en 1517, ni su caja y tipos responden a la peculiar estructura de las impresiones de Huyon. Tratándose, pues, de una contraedición anómala, al estar hecha a imitación de las producciones aldinas, pero tomando el contenido de la edición de Faelli, parece razonable situarla en los inicios de la actividad de Balthazar Gabiano, cuando su empeño inicial no fue tanto el de copiar las ediciones aldinas cuanto el de adoptar ese formato por sus dimensiones reducidas y buena legibilidad para sus propias ediciones de las obras que tomaba de otros impresores. They are generally arranged in two groups: the letters to friends, which were edited and published by Pliny himself in c.109 AD (books 19), and his correspondence with the Emperor Trajan, drawn from the imperial archives (now referred to as book 10).The first work in this volume contains Pliny's correspondence with the Emperor Trajan, 124 letters in all, followed by Pliny's speech in praise of Trajan, delivered in the Senate on 1 September 100 AD, in which he denigrates Trajan's predecessor, Domitian. The letters include his reports as governor in Pontus and Bithynia, with various legal and administrative queries, as well as mentions of the new Christian cult in his province; they 'constitute an exceptional corpus of imperial correspondence' (OCD). Bound second is a collection of lives of famous men from King Procas of Alba Longa to Pompey the Great; while it is attributed to Pliny on the title-page, it is more likely to be a fourth-century compilation.The first printing of any part of book 10 occurred in Venice on 11 May 1502, comprising letters 41121 in the modern numbering ('46 letters to Trajan recently found, with his replies'), edited by Girolamo Avanzi. The second was Beroaldo's edition of 24 January 1503 (dated more veneto, i.e.1503, not 1502), 'corrected by conjecture in fact much better than Avanzi's' (Ciapponi, p.85), containing the same group of letters, though without Avanzi's own numbering of the letters (from 27 to 73), and to which Beroaldo appended the Panegyric to Trajan.This copy, however, also contains a seemingly unrecorded printing of letters 140 of Pliny's correspondence with Trajan. All the other recorded copies of the Beroaldo 1503 edition have the collation ab8 c2 AF8 and do not have the printer's device on the title-page. The collation here, however, is A10 ab8 c2 AF8, where A1 is the title-page (now with device) and letters 140 appear on the following ten leaves (A210 and a1), resuming with letter 41 on a2r. Leaf a8 (conjoint with a1, the last leaf to contain this new text) has also been reprinted, with some variants from the original setting (it contains the end of letter 67 up to the start of letter 71). From the state of the block used for the printer's device, the device on the reprinted title must post-date the second work (dated 22 January '1504', i.e.1505, more veneto), and indeed examination of other uses of this block suggest a date of printing in the early 1510s, though the block was still being used by Faelli into the 1520s.The editio princeps of letters 140, supplied from a manuscript in France, was the November 1508 Aldine edition of all the letters of Pliny (also accompanied by the De viris illustribus and other short related texts). This copy of Beroaldo's 1503 edition was presumably still in the print shop in 1508, after which time Faelli reprinted the first quire and the bifolium a1.8 in order to update his edition in line with the new and complete Aldine text. Beroaldo himself had died in 1505, and was therefore unable to provide a new preface to the reader. One would presume that these new printed sheets would have been used to update more than one copy of the earlier edition, but we have not been able to locate another similarly expanded copy. (In 1504, Faelli had also printed a combined edition of books 19 and the defective book 10.)Provenance: A Pietro Vitriani is recorded as a notary in Reggio Emilia in the early sixteenth century.The two texts were most likely issued or sold together by Faelli: copies of both are held by the Library of Congress, Chicago, and the Bodleian. Text probably washed and lightly pressed, a handful of leaves with minor thumbing or smudges, but still a very pleasing copy, the sympathetic binding scarcely worn, and the text fresh and printed within very comfortable margins. This is an especially pleasing copy of a most unusual 15th century book in which a famed humanist stages a satirical debate over which vice is worse: drunkenness, promiscuity, or compulsive gambling. The father of three reprobate sons has died, leaving behind a will directing that the most wicked of them be disinherited and the estate split between the other two. In this debate, the libertine and the gambler gang up against the drunkard who, impaired by alcohol, is doing most of the talking but making little sense. All three bolster their arguments with references to biblical and Classical authorities, many helpfully identified here in the annotations by an early reader. Beroaldo wittily sets forth the arguments against all of these vices, but in making the drinker the loser, emphasizes that impairing one's reason is always a mistake. The Oxford Companion describes Filippo Beroaldo (1453-1505) as "the most important exponent of humanism" in Renaissance Bologna, then at the height of its power as a city-state. Beroaldo is known for his commentary on Classical satirists, and Severi notes in his discussion of Beroaldo and Apuleius that our author reaches "the apex of his humoristic writing in 1499" with the present work, noting with appreciation "the Apuleian wit and humour that permeate the text." In addition to Apuleius, the incunabular period saw the printing of dozens of editions of Roman satirists Horace, Juvenal, and Persius Flaccus, but few examples of satires by contemporary authors. In addition to the "Declamatio," we find Poggio Bracciolini's "Facetiae" (1470), a collection of more than 200 bawdy and scatological jokes; the 1476 "Satyrae" of Francesco Filelfo, a vituperative takedown of the court of Cosimo de' Medici; the "Dialogus" of Salomon and Marcolphus (ca. 1480), a witty but crude conversation between the wise King Solomon and the "fool" Marcolf, based on the riddles put to the king by the Queen of Sheba; Piovano Arlotto's "Motti e Facezie" ("Witty Remarks and Anecdotes," printed ca. 1490), a series of jokes told by a parish priest, each with a moral lesson; and of course Sebastian Brant's 1494 "Narrenschiff" ("Ship of Fools"), an early bestseller highlighting the foolish and often immoral behaviors common in society, such as procrastination, valuing wealth over wisdom, marrying for money, and collecting books without reading them. Most of these works are either collections of rather rude jokes or texts of a didactic nature, aimed at persuading the reader to lead a more Christian life. Beroaldo's work stands out from these in its urbanity, wit, and Classical scholarship. It genuinely is a 15th century text like no other. Our copy has the bonus of a pleasing retrospective binding reminiscent of the work of the 16th century Venetian artisan known as the "Mendoza Binder," named for the work he did for.

In den WarenkorbVery rare work with poetry by Filippo Beroaldo the Elder (1453-1505), one of the leading Italian humanists. The work contains twenty different poems and includes Carmen lugubre, which is considered one of Beroaldo's masterpieces, because he combined all his oratorical skills in it. The present work is very rare. It has been reco…rded in just three libraries, and we have only been able to find two other copies in sales records of the past hundred years.Beroaldo's poems were first printed in 1492 by Joannes Trechsel in Lyon, together with his speeches. This edition, titled Orationes et poemata, was edited by Jodocus Badius Ascenius (1462-1532), who had been a student of Beroaldo. The same work was published a second time in 1499 by Michel Tholoze for Denis Roce. In the 16th century, the speeches and poems were separated, and the poems were published under a new title, Epigrammata. The present work, published by Denis Roce, is very likely the first edition of the epigrammata. It is difficult to ascertain, because the work is not dated, but it most likely predates the second edition published by Ascenius in 1508.With a later annotation on the recto of the final blank leaf ("Petrus vorstius ep[iscopu]s aquen nota Theoderi"), another underneath, and two longer annotations on the verso of the final blank leaf, one in a contemporary and one in a later hand, with sermons of prayers. A water stain in the outer margin throughout, somewhat affectign the text, and wormholes in the inner margin throughout, slightly affecting the text, outer corner of final blank leaf restored, with some loss of the manuscript annotations. Philip Beroald the Younger (1472endash;1518), son of a cousin and disciple of Philip Beroald the Elder. He taught at the Sapienza University in Rome, where in 1516 he was appointed librarian of the Vatican by Leo X. Copy in fair condition, the first leaf counterfounded to the insertion of the volume and extensive although almost invisible restoration in the lower margin, the other leaves in good condition with tiny veiling at the entrance of the seams; the last leaf bears evidence of a small plaque that he was pressured on.

Just about 150 years into the Common Era, the African writer Apuleius produced one of the most influential novels ever written, a model for Cervantes, Rabelais, Shakespeare, Salman Rushdie and Angela Carter. The plot surrounds the misfortunes of Lucius, who fumbles around ambitiously with magic spells and accidently turns himself into a donkey. The narrative of Lucius's four-footed travels is interspersed with many other tales, including the story of Cupid and Psyche--one of the first examples in culture of a fairy tale transmitted in written rather than oral form. In the end, Lucius recovers human form through a ritual of religious initiation into the cult of Isis. The book survived, barely, in manuscript (I think it survived due to its pornographic passages, which were probably quite dear to cloistered monks), and was revived in the Renaissance with the commentary of the humanist scholar Filippo Beroaldo, included in this edition of the text, which is only the second printed edition to feature illustrations. Very good with faults as described.

In den WarenkorbSecond known copy of the third edition (1635) of a rare satirical Dutch adaptation (first and second editions 1634) of a moralistic story in Latin by Filippo Beroaldo (1453-1505), possibly intended in this adaptation to satirize the Princes of Orange. The quotations from classical sources are given in Latin, each followed by a D…utch verse translation that takes some liberties with the text. Pieter Nootmans (active 1627-1635) contributed a verse about the book, printed on the back of the title-page. Following the main text is a drinking song by H. Rulant (active 1632-1634), with its own part-title, which had been published separately in 1632. We have located only one other copy of the present edition, in the library of Tresoar in Leeuwarden.The British Library database of bindings includes one binding by this Ghent binder. The title-page is worn and dirty, with a small abrasion obliterating the letter S in "Stichtigh", and the upper outside corner of the last leaf has been restored, with the loss of a few words of the text of the added drinking song. The binding is good, with some cracks in the hinges and minor damage along the edges.l KVK & WorldCat (1 copy); cf.
