In den WarenkorbALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1897). (1854) 1897 1st edition. Large 8vo (165 x 220mm). Ppxxii,344. Coloured frontispiece, colour and b/w plates. Publisher's half vellum, marbled boards, leather spine-label, top edge gilt, other edges rough-cut. Some fraying to spine else light foxing but very good. This edition was published as part of The Sportsman's Library series by Edward Arnold. Series editor Sir Herbert Maxwell. The hunting memoirs of Grantley F. Berkeley, politician, writer and short-tempered sportsman. All manner of sport with a great deal on fox hunting. The author contributed to The Field and other journals and wrote several sporting and non-sporting books including the three volume historical romance, Berkeley Castle, an unfavourable review of which prompted Berkeley, together with his brother Craven, to physically assault (with a hunting whip) the publisher of said review, James Fraser. Shortly after, Berkeley went on to fight duel with the author of the review, Dr. William Maginn during which ".three shots were exchanged between the gentleman, of whom only one, Dr. Maginn, was slightly wounded." Sir Herbert Maxwell felt that Berkeley's book was worthy of inclusion in The Sportsman's Library as of all his works it remains ".of most interest, and, though not without defects, has sufficient merit and has become sufficiently scarce to deserve a place. The frank egoism of the author will amuse, it is to be hoped, without deterring, the reader. .With all his faults, Grantley Berkeley's intense love of horse and hound, of wild nature and country life, must secure the sympathy of his readers, and enable them to pass lightly over the evidence of egoism and occasional solecisms in good taste which may be encountered." .

In den Warenkorb2pp., 4to. In good condition, on aged paper, with traces of mount at head. The Earl and his brother loathed one another. FitzHardinge was a notorious philanderer, and Berkeley - whose violent behaviour included assaulting the bookseller Fraser and duelling with Maginn - held his position as a Member of Parliament to spite him. The letter begins: 'Sir. | You have published a letter from Mr. Grantley Berkeley in your Paper, a short time since, in which he asserts his knowledge of the quarter whence arises a vindictive persecution, and whence come funds for the support of an action for seduction, and in a comment, you distinctly apply this insinuation to me, and ascribe to me an interference hardly fraternal. The correspondence which I now enclose [not present] (the only communication I have ever held) will enable you to judge of the truth of the insinuation in Mr. Berkeley's letters, and as the action has dropped for want of a small sum for fees, no prejudice to a question before a Court of Law can now attend the publication of Matilda letters, and I feel it due to myself to make known the motives and extent of my interference in the matter, after the misrepresentation in your Paper.'.
