Irregularly shaped piece of paper, consisting of the front and sides of an envelope. Roughly 14 x 18 cm. Good, but with long vertical closed tear to right of signature, neatly repaired on reverse with archival tape. Reads 'London June Twelve 1832. - | Lady Frederick Bentinck | Bedford Hotel | Brighton | [signed] G. Bentinck.' Red ink postmark, circular and topped with crown, reading 'FREE | 12 JU 12 | 1832 | +'. Remains of red wax seal at foot. Docketed 'Bentinck' along right-hand edge.

In good condition, lightly aged, with minor traces of grey paper mount adhering to blank reverse. Addressed by Bentinck in the customary staggered way: 'Lieut: Genl. / Lord FitzRoy Somerset G.C.B. / Horse Guards'. Bentinck's signature 'G. Bentinck' is at bottom left, underlined but without the line above the signature. The merest slither of the bottom of the loop of the initial 'G' has been cropped. See image.

Zustand: Very Good. First edition hard back binding in publisher's original light brown cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine and to the front cover. 8vo. 9'' x 6''. Contains 482 [24-page publisher's catalogue] printed pages of text with portrait frontispiece and 23 collotype plates. Spine ends turned-in with tiny rubs and in Very Good condition, no dust wrapper. 1p., 8vo. On bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with closed tear along fold line of second leaf, which is blank other than the manuscript docketing: 'William Griffith Esq. | Captain | in the Association of the Town of Pwlhelly and it's [sic] neighbourhood'. The actual document, on the recto of the first leaf is a printed form completed in manuscript. The king's bold signature 'George R.' is at the top left, while the Duke's ('Portland') is appended 'By His Majesty's Command' at the end. The left-hand margin bears three seals: the bottom two blind-stamped and the top one in red wax under paper. At bottom left the text on the reverse of the second leaf is repeated. Griffith is constituted and appointed to be 'Captain in a Company of Infantry'. Portland was Prime Minister of Great Britain in 1783, and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, 1807-1809.
