First edition of this work on the challenges of writing biography. Octavo, bound in full synthetic leather with gilt titles to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands. Association copy, inscribed twice by John Maynard Keynes to his mother Florence Ada Keynes, once on the title page without the date and once on the half-title with the date, "F.A.K. fr. J.M.K. 1945." John Maynard Keynes was a British economist, whose ideas fundamentally changed the theory of macroeconomics and the economic policies of governments. Originally trained in mathematics, he built on and greatly refined earlier work on the causes of business cycles, and was one of the most influential economists of the 20th century. In very good condition. Arthur Christopher Bensonâs The Leaves of the Tree: Studies in Biography (1924) is a reflective collection of essays that examines the art and purpose of biography as a means of interpreting character and moral experience. Drawing on his background as a writer, educator, and essayist, Benson explores the challenges inherent in reconstructing lives from memory, letters, and subjective impressions, emphasizing the biographerâs role as both artist and moral observer. The work situates biography at the intersection of literature and ethics, suggesting that the truthful portrayal of personality requires empathy, restraint, and imaginative insight.
