Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Format is approximately 5.25 inches by 7.75 inches. xv, [1], 308 pages. Frontis illustration. Index. Pencil erasure residue inside front cover. Rear Admiral Benjamin F. Sands (February 11, 1811 - June 30, 1883) was an officer in the United States Navy during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. During hostilities between the United States and Mexico, he was attached to the Home Squadron and served off Tabasco and Tuxpan on the brig USS Washington. In the 1850s, he commanded the steamer Walker in the Gulf of Mexico on coast survey duty and invented a deep sea sounding apparatus and other hydrographic instruments. Commissioned captain in 1862, he joined the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron as commander of Dacotah in 1863. Served as Superintendent of the Naval Observatory. Commissioned Rear Admiral on April 27, 1871, he remained at the Observatory until he retired in 1874. From 1834 to 1841, he was engaged in coastal survey work and during the mid-40s was attached to the Bureau (Depot) of Charts and Instruments at the Naval Observatory. In 1861, Sands served on west coast survey duty as commander of the Active. In February 1863, Sands participated in the engagement at Fort Caswell. He remained off the Carolinas for another two years, commanding the steamer Fort Jackson during the attacks on Fort Fisher. In February 1865, he was transferred to the West Gulf Blockading Squadron and assigned to duty off the Texas coast. Through the end of the American Civil War, he commanded a division off that coast; and, on June 2, 1865, took formal possession of Galveston, Texas for the Union. After the war, Sands, appointed Commodore in July 1866, served at the Boston Navy Yard.

8 boldly hand-colored drawings with manuscript verse. On a 12-7/8" x 16" sheet of laid paper folded to four panels (sizes vary, approximately 6-3/8" x 3-1/8"), each with upper and lower flaps. Lower flap of first drawing lacking. "Published at a time when children's literature was still almost entirely moral and instructional in content, the earliest movable books helped usher in an era of more entertaining literary fare . Stories about Harlequin and other popular characters from plays were reproduced as turn-up booklets until more elaborate toy theatre publications became available. They were made of a single sheet of paper folded vertically into four sections, with slits cut along the tops and bottom of the fold to create flaps. When closed, the flaps illustrated one scene; by lifting one flap after another the reader could enjoy a surprise 'unfolding' of the story" (McGrath). Benjamin Sands's Metamorphosis or, A Transformation of Pictures with Poetical Explanations, first published in 1787, quickly became the most popular form of this work, with Welch recording nearly forty editions published to 1820. As in the published version, the present anonymous manuscript copy depicts Adam transforming into Eve as a mermaid; a lion transforming into an eagle; a man becoming rich; and the rich man falling ill and dying. Each image is accompanied by moralistic verse telling the tale, beginning "Adam came first upon the stage." and concluding ".Turn up and see mans end at last." Although unsigned and undated, the laid paper and iron gall ink suggest the work to have been accomplished at the end of the 18th century. Although such manuscript copies by schoolchildren are known, they are quite scarce given their delicate ephemeral nature. Welch 1163.1-39, pp. 387-96; McGarth, This Magical Book p. 9 (ref); Young, Drawn to Enchant, p. 195 Light foxing and some faint staining, edgewear and tears along folds, nearly split along central vertical fold; images remain vivid 8 boldly hand-colored drawings with manuscript verse. Wood cut illustrations by James Poupard. Folded sheet, printed recto and verso, with movable flaps. 1 vols. 12mo. Each image is accompanied by moralistic verse telling the tale, beginning "Adam comes first upon the stage." Sands's delightful Metamorphosis was a popular children's toy book well into the middle of the 19th century; however all editions are rare, and complete copies such as this one are seldom seen. Poupard, the engraver, worked in Philadelphia from 1769 to 1807. Shaw 38871; Welch 1163.33; McGarth, This Magical Book p. 9 Self-wrappers, early restitching along the folds, minor later tape repair. Usual foxing and staining. Housed in a later marbled slipcase Wood cut illustrations by James Poupard. Folded sheet, printed recto and verso, with movable flaps. 1 vols. 12mo.

[SANDS, Benjamin, author]. Metamorphosis; or, a Transformation of Pictures, with Poetical Explanations, for the Amusement of Young Persons. New York: Samuel Wood and Sons. Printed by J. Rakestraw, Philadelphia, 1824. A later edition, first published in Philadelphia circa 1787. Oblong leaf folded perpendicularly three times into 4 leaves; the top (80 mm) and bottom (60 mm) are folded inward over the central portion and spaces between the leaves have been cut out to form flaps. Leaf when open: (11 1/2 x 14 3/4 inches; 295 x 372 mm); when folded:(5 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches; 140 x 95 mm) With numerous woodcut illustrations by J. Poupard. Each leaf is folded inward at the top and bottom to create multiple illustrations when the flaps are closed and open. The illustrations include Adam and Eve, a lion and a griffin, a man and a heart, a man and a skeleton. The first line of text reads: "1. Adam comes first upon the stage, And Eve from out his side, Who was given him in marriage; Turn up and see his bride." Self wrapped. With some browning, spotting and dampstaining throughout. With tape repairs at folds. One fold is detached but present. The final bottom flap (containing #11) in possible facsimile, or supplied from another copy. Overall a very nice copy. The last copy of the first Philadelphia edition listed on Rare Book Hub was sold in 1937 and it states that the only other cop recorded was listed in Rosenbach #445. [Together with]: A later edition of the same work, dated 1827. This copy worn and dampstained with hand-stitched repairs but complete. Some hand-coloring to the Adam and Eve plate. A tear runing through the center of the leaves. Also known as a harlequinade, or a turn-up, this early moveable book for children has upper and lower flaps the reader manipulates according to instructions in the poem in order to transform the pictures. "A popular transformation or "metamorphosis" book with illustrations printed after James Poupard. In addition to the clever and detailed images of animals and figures, there are ornamental designs composing the head- and tail-pieces on the inner plates consisting of alphabet letters and numerals, as well as the author's name. The verses give instructions on how to proceed with the foldings." (Welch 1163.25) Welch 1163.25. HBS 69587. $1,500. TRANSFORMATION BOOK (illustrator).

New York, "Published by Samuel Wood, No.357, Pearl Street, Pinted by Joseph Rakestraw, Philadelphia", 1814, (8) pag. as a fold-out in four sections, title with woodcut vignette within ornamental border, backwrapper with vignette of a sailing vessel, illustrated with 8 more woodcuts signed by J. Poupard - the single sheet is folded to produce a four-panelled flap-book, each of the four leaves may be folded-out at the top and bottom to reveal four possible other (metamorphic) pictures per leaf, self-wrapping, 15 x 10 cm./ folding out to 29 x 37 cm. = Scarce transformation-book, published at a time when children's literature was still almost entirely moral and instructional in content, these earliest movable books helped usher in an era of more entertaining literary fare. Author or creator identified as Benjamin Sands in the ornamental running border made up of the alphabet and numerals intended for use as a guide for sewing samplers. The panels have short printed poems on a moral theme, the final a skeleton exclaiming "O Man! now see thou art but dust (.)". This chapbook was first published in 1787 and went through 40 or so editions, but is rare in any condition as it was designed to be folded and unfolded in use and is usually found - if preserved at all - in a frail state. Our copy has been lightly restored: some loose folding flaps have been reattached and there is the inevitable llight foxing or toning; the central fold has some minor loss.
