8° (23x14,8cm): *8(*1 ?1,2) 2*8 3*6 A-K8 L6Pagination: [9] 37 172 [2] pp.Hardcover with half leather binding: leather spine and paper covered boards. The spine is divided in six decorated shields of which the second shows the gilded title on a red background. The front board is slightly disjointed, and for this reason the first ten pages have come loose. Ex libris of Adolph Melchior is pasted inside. Title page shows an engraving by A. Cardon, after J. Buys. The last page shows a pencil drawing. Overall the book is in fair condition. The book contains 40 emblem like Illustrations after J. Buys, engraved by A. Cardon. Only the title page illustration is signed, but the other illustrations show the same characteristics. The medallion portraits of Wolff and Deken are missing. Betje (Elisabeth ) Wolff (1738-1804) and Aagje (Agatha) Deken (1741-1804) met each other in 1776. When Betje' s husband died in 1777 they decided to move in together. This was the start of a fruitful partnership. They wrote many novels, poetry and idealistic manifests. In 'Fabelen' Wolff and Deken re-used old fables and transformed them into beautiful new stories (12 stories after La Fontaine). The foreword contains a disclaimer in which Wolff and Deken explain that these fables are not their own work, but rather re-interpretations of the fables, of which they have kept the overall moral but altered the story surrounding it to their own liking. In total, this book contains 40 fables, each accompanied by an emblem-like engraving that provides an excellent addition to the text. The original author of each fable is also credited at the end. Fables are a well-known and widespread phenomenon and this literary genre can be found all over the world. Usually, the main characteristic of fables is that these stories humanise animals, plants or objects. Especially when humans appear alongside animals in the story, animals with human characteristics add an odd and often moralistic undertone to the narrative. This two-fold means that fables are often stories in which impossibilities happen but which are still relevant to the everyday life of humans. Namely, within the fable narrative there is often an equivocal reality: on the one hand, straightforward, regular things happen whilst on the other hand there is almost an extra dimension, with small deviations from reality. It is this combination which makes it possible for the readers to relate the story to their own lives. L0861.

Sara Burgerhart is considered the first psychological novel in letter-form in Dutch literature and is one of the very few books from older Dutch literature that is still being read today, two and a quarter of a century later. This is mostly because of the stylistic quality of these first novel in letters, which was the result of a cooperation between the two friends, intense like no other in Dutch literature (Buijnsters). After its appearance in 1782, the book was immediately met with succes: after a few months, a second edition followed and three years later a third. Even some German translations followed shortly after. In this second edition, the 6 well known illustrations by Jacobus Buijs are missing, engraved by C. Bogerts. These plates could be purchased separately from 1783 onwards - a common practice at the time - and bound with the rest of the work. This explains why first editions with the plates have been found, and why they are sometimes absent in copies of the second edition. Copy without the 6 plates (which could be purchased seperately). Part 1 "voorrede" (3 lvs.) with waterstains.

These verses attribute various virtues of conduct and character to the sailor returning home, the modest woman, honorable beggar, honest merchant, gardener, widowed mother, devout stone cutter, beau, thankful child, helpful neighbor, happy bachelor, etc"Originally issued in 1778, this celebrated collection was the first fruit of the highly productive collaboration of Betje Wolff and Aagje Deken (1741-1804), the two most important Dutche women writers of the late 18th century.
