The first volume of a 12-volume historical account of the Third Anglo-Dutch War (1672-1674); written by the Dutch physician Johan Gribius (d. 1685), translated by Johann Christoph Beer (1638-1712). The copy features a double-page engraved frontispiece/title (its allegorical meaning is explained at beginning of the book) and a complete set of 16 copperplates: a folding plate with a vista of Utrecht (facing p. 99), a vista of Schenkenschans (facing p. 95) and 14 ground plans of fortified cities and fortresses in what is today Germany and the Netherlands: Orsoy (facing p. 68), Rheinberg (p. 69), Wesel (p. 74), Rees (p. 80), Emmerich (p. 81), Groenlo (p. 83), Arnhem (p. 93), Tiel (p. 94), Deventer (p. 107), Doesburg (p. 113), Zutphen (p. 113), Nijmegen (p. 142), Fort Crevecoeur (p. 146) and Groningen (p. 174). Fraktur typeface; pages are decorated with headpiece and tailpiece.
