With Index and printed in Hebrew with commentary and notes in Latin. - Nice set in prize-bindings of this anthology of Hebrew Wisdom literature, entirely printed in Hebrew. With Latin commentary and notes by Jan Theodor Beelen (1807-1884), exegete and Orientalist Professor of Sacred Scripture and Oriental languages in Catholic University of Louvain. The first part of the Chrestomathia, which is the most important, the other two being a mere supplement to it, is divided into ten chapters with the following headings: (1) Acute et Sapienter Dicta; (2) Sententiae et Proverbiae; (3) Fabulae et Parabolae; (4) Epistolae Familiares; (5) Selecta Historiacarum; (6) Grammatici et Lexicographi; (7) Scripturae Interpretes; (8) Philosophi et Theologi; (9) Talmudica; (10) Poeta. The author draws only to a slight extent from Plautavitius' "Florilegium Rabbinicum" and from Buxtorf the greater part being taken from Jewish sources, such as Sefer Toledot ha-abalah, Seder 'Olam, Sifra, Mekilta, etc. In the poetical part the author makes use of Abraham ibn Ezra, Moses ibn Ezra, Judah ha-Levi, Gabirol, etc. Beelen deserves the credit of reviving Oriental studies in Belgium, and of introducing Oriental printing by means of a complete font of Hebrew, Syriac, Arabic, and Ethiopic type, which he purchased.
