First Edition. An exceptional copy; fine in an equally fine dw, now mylar-sleeved. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered. Literally as new.; 244 pages; Description: ix, 244 p. : ill. , map ; 22 cm. Subjects: Jews --Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) --Personal narratives --Netherlands --Biography. A version of this book was published by Seven Locks Press in 1998. Summary: In 1939, as the Nazi occupation grew from threat to reality, the Jewish population throughout Europe faced heart-wrenching decisions-to flee and lose their homes or to go into hiding, hoping against all odds to avoid the fate of being discovered. Holocaust survivor Flory A. Van Beek faced this terrible choice, and in this poignant testament of hope she takes us on her personal journey into one of history's darkest hours. Only a teenage girl when the Nazis invaded her neutral homeland of Holland, Flory watched the only life she had ever known disappear. Tearfully leaving her family, Flory tried to escape on the infamous SS Simon Bolivar passenger ship with Felix, the young Jewish man from Germany who would later become her husband. Their voyage brought not safety but more peril as their ship was blown up by Nazi planted mines, one of the first passenger ships destroyed by the Germans during World War II, sending nearly all of its passengers to a watery end. Miraculously, both Flory and Felix survived. After recovering from their injuries in England, they returned to their homeland, overjoyed to be reunited with their families yet shocked to discover their beloved Holland a much-changed place. As the Nazi grip tightened, they were forced into hiding. Sheltered by compassionate strangers in confined quarters, cut off from the outside world and their relatives, they faced hunger and the stress of daily life shadowed by the ever-present threat of certain death. Yet they also discovered, with the remarkable and brave families who sacrificed their own safety to help keep Flory and Felix alive, a set of friends that remain as close as family to this day. A tribute to family, faith, and the power of good in the face of disparate evil, this gripping account captures the terror of the Holocaust, the courage of those who risked their lives to protect their fellow compatriots, and the faith of those who, against all odds, managed to survive. 1 Kg.

Zustand: Sehr gut. 265 S. mit zahlreichen Abbildungen; 22 cm; Sehr guter Zustand. // Flory van Beek lebte von 1920-2010. Flory schrieb ihre Memoiren über ihr Leben als Holocaust-Überlebende. Wie Anne Frank war auch Flory noch ein junges Mädchen, als die Deutschen ihren Einmarsch in Europa begannen. Als jüdische Familie in den Niederlanden verfolgte Florys Familie die Ereignisse in Europa mit Sorge, hoffte aber, dass ihre Heimat verschont bleiben würde. Doch als die Bedrohung durch die Nazis immer näher rückte, wurde Flory und ihrer Familie klar, dass die Niederlande nicht mehr lange unberührt bleiben würden. Mit 18 Jahren sah Flory die Chance, dem kriegszerstörten Europa zu entfliehen, und bestieg mit ihrem späteren Ehemann Felix, einem jungen deutschen Juden, das Schiff SS Simon Bolivar mit Ziel Südamerika. Tragischerweise wurde das Schiff durch deutsche Minen zerstört, wobei 104 der 400 Passagiere ums Leben kamen. Schwer verletzt, verbrachte das Paar mehr als sechs Monate in England, um sich zu erholen, bevor es in die Niederlande zurückkehrte genau zu dem Zeitpunkt, als Deutschland einmarschierte. Als ihre Familie und Freunde nach und nach verschwanden, mussten Flory und Felix untertauchen. Ihre fünfjährige Leidenszeit wurde durch die Güte und das Mitgefühl der Familien erträglich, die selbst in der dunkelsten Stunde der Geschichte ihr Leben riskierten, um ihnen Schutz zu bieten. Flory verknüpft die Schrecken des Holocaust mit einer berührenden Liebesgeschichte und veranschaulicht so eindrücklich die Stärke des menschlichen Geistes. Flory emigrierte 1948 in die USA und brachte einen Koffer voller Papiere und Fotografien mit, die sie während der deutschen Besatzung im Versteck vergraben hatte. Das Material bildet heute eine der größten Sammlungen aus den Niederlanden und befindet sich im United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. /gs wk II ISBN: 9783765519604 Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 600 gebunden, illustrierter Orig.-Pappband;
