Printed on hand-made Van Gelder paper and bound within the…original limp vellum parchment, gilt lettered at the spine and upper wrapper with a small gilt-stamped decoration. Very good indeed and housed in the original stiff card slipcase, which is lightly soiled and rubbed. Thirty-seven poems, originally published posthumously in 1641, "pirated in part by Henry Bold in 1657; & thereafter wholly neglected. Although the book in its entirety affords some reason for this neglect, I believe that the following selection will show in occasional Donne-Like phrases and rare whole poems reasons still better for a new and sympathetic attention" - from Meynell's foreword.

A limited edition, limited to 1250 copies, of which this is numbered 871.The poetry of Thomas Beedome, a seventeenth century poet of whom little is known. This charming volume include…s his humane poems, epigrams, epitaphs, and divine poems.This edition was published by the Nonesuch Press. The Nonesuch Press specialised in limited edition and private press. They were founded by Francis Meynell, his second wife Vera Mendel and their friend David Garnett. Their aspiration was for their publications to be aligned with the same aesthetic standards as the private press movement. They were unusual as they used a small Albion press to design the books, but had them printed by commercial printers. In doing so, books with the quality of a fine-press were produced, but available to a wider audience at lower prices. In the publisher's original paper vellum wraps. Externally, smart, with some very light handling marks to the wraps, as is usual with paper vellum. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Fine. None (illustrator). book.

In the original glassine jacket (lacking most of spine) and original cardboard slipcase, slightly worn. Dreyfus 54. âA breath of browning just to… untrimmed edges, otherwise A PRISTINE COPY, well protected for 90 years by its original jacket and slipcase. The verse of Thomas Beedome (d. 1641) includes love poems, elegies for such figures as his friend John Donne and Gustav Adolphus of Sweden, and religious works. Somewhat in the manner of Donne, they were published in 1641 after his death, and a pirated edition came out in 1657. Thereafter they languished until Meynell took an interest in them and edited them for this printing. The Nonesuch Press was founded in 1923 by typographer and book designer Francis Meynell (1891-1975) with the help of his friend David Garnett and his future wife, Vera Mendel. Meynell designed his books on a small Albion hand press, but had them printed commercially in order to keep the price of well-designed books made of quality materials within the means of readers and collectors who could not afford most private press editions.
