Fue proclamado doctor admirabilis por el concilio de Aquisgrán en 836 y el papa León XIII le concedió ese título para la Iglesia universal en 1899. El gran cuerpo de sus copiosas publicaciones abarca temas histórico-biográficos, didáctico-científicos, poético-literarios y exegéticos. Entre estas últimas destacan los dos libros de Homilías sobre los Evangelios, cincuenta en total, en las que expone con un estilo claro, sobrio y sincero el sentido literal y alegórico de pasajes tomados de esos cuatro libros sagrados. One of only three incunable editions transmitted under the name of Bede, combining… a late medieval scholastic core with a humanist Ciceronian addendum. The Repertorium auctoritatum Aristotelis, traditionally attributed to Bede the Venerable, is an alphabetically arranged florilegium of philosophical auctoritates. It consists of brief excerpts, drawn primarily from Aristotle, each accompanied by a short explanatory or paraphrastic comment. Conceived as a practical tool for reference and instruction, it was well suited to late medieval scholastic teaching and preaching. The attribution to Bede is made explicit on the opening page, which states "a reverendissimo et venerabili Beda presbitero edita", a formulation that contributed to the work's long-standing acceptance under his authorship. The title page is illustrated with a full-page woodcut depicting a scholastic lecture scene, showing a master reading at a lectern before a group of students, visually underscoring the book's pedagogical function. The main scholastic compilation is followed by the appended Auctoritates Ciceronis, introduced separately and preceded by a dedicatory epistle to Sebald Schreyer by Peter Danhauser, and the volume concludes with a short Latin poem, functioning as a conventional closing piece. The Aristotelian material is presented without distinction between authentic and spurious works, a feature characteristic of medieval Aristotelian transmission. Aristotle is treated as a unified authority, without philological discrimination. Alongside him, the compilation draws extensively on other philosophical auctoritates, notably Boethius, Avicenna, Averroes, and Porphyry, with Seneca also cited, particularly in moral contexts. In later manuscript and printed traditions, Senecan material becomes increasingly prominent. The present Nuremberg edition, printed by Peter Wagner, was prepared under the direction of Peter Danhauser of Nuremberg, an editor and organizer of learned texts active in the 1490s and connected with the humanist and scholarly circles of Nuremberg and Vienna, including Hartmann Schedel, Conrad Celtis, and Sebald Schreyer (see Worstbrock). In this edition, Danhauser appended the humanist Auctoritates Ciceronis to the scholastic Repertorium. This Ciceronian section is introduced by the standard preface praising Cicero as studii humanitatis maximus cultor, taken verbatim from Albrecht von Eyb's Margarita poetica, and is preceded by a dedicatory epistle addressed to Sebald Schreyer, church administrator of St. Sebald and a prominent Nuremberg patron. In the dedication, Danhauser presents the Ciceronian excerpts as a moral and pedagogical aid for students and young readers and frames the addition as a humanist offering connected to Schreyer's cultural and bibliophilic activity. The Repertorium was later reissued without the Ciceronian appendix and continued to circulate independently into the sixteenth century. Bede the Venerable (ca. 673-735), an Anglo-Saxon monk of Wearmouth-Jarrow, was among the most influential scholars of the early Middle Ages, best known for the Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum and numerous biblical and chronological works. Modern scholarship has demonstrated that the attribution of the Repertorium to Bede is untenable: its reliance on Aristotelian texts, Arabic commentators such as Avicenna and Averroes, and later scholastic authorities places its composition firmly in the late Middle Ages. The work is therefore regarded as Pseudo-Bede. This book is one of only three known incunable editions transmitted under the name of Bede the Venerable. According to the Incunabula Short Title Catalogue (ISTC), these comprise the Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum and two editions of the Repertor. Title page with full page woodcut illustration. (Index). Very rare, early, and apparently first complete edition of the seminal works by the "Father of English History", the venrable Bede. Bede?s most famous work, his "An Ecclesiastical History of the English People" (Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum)? begins with the invasion of the British Isles by Roman forces and is considered one of the most important historical records documenting Roman rule, Anglo-Saxon settlement and the evolution of the Church on the island. With its focus on Anglo-Saxon history, the work is considered a key foundational text in the forming of a national English identity. The "Ecclesiastical History" contains stories that serve as the only source documenting the conversion to Christianity of the Anglo-Saxon tribes. It tells the story of Britons from Julius Caesar?s invasion, to the time of Bede himself . He tells the story of battles, conversions and miracles performed by monks and bishops, and details Britain?s early history from the Roman invasion. He furthermore describes the organization and establishment of Christianity in the English church and covers the personal history of ?Holy Ethelwald and miracles of growth within the English church, such as the development of the bishopric. "Bede?s works fall into three groups: grammatical and ?scientific,? scriptural commentary, and historical and biographical. His earliest works included treatises on spelling, hymns, figures of speech, verse, and epigrams. His first treatise on chronology, De temporibus (?On Times?), with a brief chronicle attached, was written in 703. In 725 he completed a greatly amplified version, De temporum ratione (?On the Reckoning of Time?), with a much longer chronicle. Both these books were mainly concerned with the reckoning of Easter. His earliest biblical commentary was probably that on the Revelation to John (703??709)" in this and many similar works, his aim was to transmit and explain relevant passages from the Fathers of the Church. Although his interpretations were mainly allegorical, treating much of the biblical text as symbolic of deeper meanings, he used some critical judgment and attempted to rationalize discrepancies. Among his most notable are his verse (705?716) and prose (before 721) lives of St. Cuthbert, bishop of Lindisfarne. These works are uncritical and abound with accounts of miracles a more exclusively historical work is Historia abbatum (c. 725" ?Lives of the Abbots?). In 731/732 Bede completed his Historia ecclesiastica. Divided into five books, it recorded events in Britain from the raids by Julius Caesar (55?54 BCE) to the arrival in Kent (597 CE) of St. Augustine of Canterbury. For his sources, he claimed the authority of ancient letters, the ?traditions of our forefathers,? and his own knowledge of contemporary events. Bede?s Historia ecclesiastica leaves gaps tantalizing to secular historians. Although overloaded with the miraculous, it is the work of a scholar anxious to assess the accuracy of his sources and to record only what he regarded as trustworthy evidence. Only three editions of Bede's Opera Omnia are known before Dr. Giles' edition from 1843 - 44. The first was printed in 1563 and the third in 1688. The 1688-edition constitutes the second edition of the present 1612-edition which is "According to Dr. Henry, the only complete edition" (Lowndes I:143). These three editions are also the only ones known to have been printed in folio (though Lowndes mentions the 1688-edition as 4to). The 1612-edition is the rarest. Some of the works contained in this edition are said not to be Bede's own, as some of the many scientific, richly illustrated works on geography, the heavens, the universe, music etc. bear small resemblance to his other works. Britt. 11th ed.) all these editions contain works which cannot by any possibility be Bede's. Especially the first two volumes contain many scientific treatises ; on cosmology, music, etc.

Descripción de la pieza: Muy raro y escaso caso de papel supersticioso basado en el arte o arcano de la numerología del tipo habitual que solían requisar los inquisidores tras la anatemización de la astrología y prácticas adivinatorias deterministas tras el Concilio de Trento. A golpe de vista, el documento muestra una miscelánea de simbología propia de algunas disciplinas de las pseudociencias humanísticas conocidas hasta el momento. Aparecen símbolos propios de la alquimia, ruedas pitagóricas, numerología, referencias a las Tablas Alfonsíes y prosa explicativa de cada fórmula adivinatoria. Es complejo determinar con detalle, en un análisis apriorista, las influencias o fuentes de las que bebe esta técnica supersticiosa, pero podríamos enunciar que el planteamiento principal deviene directamente de las obras de Pitágoras, más concretamente de las conocidas como "ruedas pitagóricas". Se trata de oráculos o pronósticos que ponen en relación diversas variables numéricas o simbólicas que tienen que ver con cualidades o datos personales del sujeto sobre el que se quiere conocer el porvenir (nombre, apellidos, mes o año de nacimiento, fases de la luna, correspondencia entre números y letras, etc.) Estos contenidos están estrechamente vinculados con los 22 arcanos mayores del Tarot (habilidad, secretos, germinación, protección, ciencia, amor, protección divina, socorro, justicia) sin embargo, en este caso el conjuro adivinatorio va más allá, pues no sólo se introducen más variables numerológicas, tales como simbología propia de la alquimia y el esoterismo, sino que recoge la tradición de la cábala judía y los escritos adivinatorios numéricos islámicos. Hasta este punto, si bien no muy habitual, estaríamos ante otro de los muchos engendros culturales contemporáneos a la época. Esta pieza, no obstante, extralimita lo convencional por el planteamiento cuasi jurídico de las ruedas, todo lo anteriormente mencionado se entremezcla con la práctica forense jurídica del momento a través de casos prácticos. Se trata de ejemplos descritos con detalle sobre cómo proceder en un hipotético uso de la rueda empleando nombres de personas, sus datos y las "operaciones" requeridas en tal caso. El resultado es un producto seudocientífico, solo apto para iniciados en esta multitud de materias. En este sentido, se trata sin duda de un documento único, digno de un estudio en profundidad y con amplias posibilidades en diversas disciplinas. Conservación: Buena conservación. En el caso de las hojas correspondientes al siglo XVII, la tinta tiene exceso de hierro, lo que ha supuesto alguna degradación puntual del papel por oxidación. Manchas de tinta y otros líquidos en algunos puntos. Dobleces. El cuaderno se encuentra descosido (se aprecian restos de cordel negro).
