Bechtel, a partner in the prominent New York law firm Carter, Ledyard and Milburn, was an important collector of the works of Callot and Daumier and an avid gardener who was a leading expert on roses. He wrote prolifically about art, roses and related subjects. One of the most significant American jurists of the twentieth century, Hand was a judge of the U.S. Southern District of New York from 1904-1924 and a judge of the Court of Appeals, Second Circuit, from 1924 to 1956.
