Steuerwald.Aside from writing poems, Bax (Rotterdam 1793 - Rotterdam 1837) was a translator, preacher, and well-educated in mathematics and physics. The bundle 'Nagelaten gedichten' does not contain his poem 'Het land onzer vreemdelingschap': the sole existing copy of this work went up in flames (together with its author) in a Rotterdam hotelroom.Some signs of wear, otherwise in good condition.Lit.: NNBW IV, 92; F & vd B p. 39.- literature, poetry - Bax (Rotterdam 1793 - Rotterdam 1837) was een veelzijdig man: naast predikant (het laatst te Zutphen) was hij wis- en natuurkundige en schrijver en vertaler van gedichten. De bundel nagelaten gedichten werd na zijn dood door zijn Zutphense vrienden samengesteld, mede om de geldzorgen van de weduwe wat te verlichten. Het dichtstuk 'Het land onzer vreemdelingschap', dat hij enkele dagen voor zijn dood onder algemeene toejuiching in Rotterdam had voorgelezen, staat er niet in. Van dat werk bestond maar één exemplaar en dat verbrandde mèt de auteur in de Rotterdamse hotelkamer waar hij logeerde. Achterin staat een lijstje met andere uitgaven van Thieme (4 pagina's). L0019.

In het voorwoord: "deze bundel, die ons in menige eenvoedige proeve als in zijn hart doet lezen, moge het bewijs opleveren, dat hij den Heer lief had en voor den Hemel leefde.".
