[Batley gave a full transcription of the Adversaria to Bilney's college, Trinity Hall, Cambridge] Contents: Preface -- I Biographical sketch -- Published works of Thomas Bilney -- III The history of Bilney's Vulgate [Lyons, 1520, since 1588 in the library of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge] -- IV Selected Adversaria [from 300+ written in Latin in his Bible]: (a) typical quotations, (b) the author's opinions -- V Important events, 1511-31. -- `We have already accounted Bilney to be a careful, painstaking student. We may now give special attention to some Notes which express the writer's personal opinions. These thoughts are of value to us as revealing the real thoughts of Bilney. Not written for publication, coming from the man himself, they are more trustworthy than the second-hand information of Foxe and More.' (p. 35) -- At Genesis 3.5: `Liberum arbitrium mendacium' (p. 38) -- Exodus 1: `Rex Egipti iussit obstetricibus vt occiderent masculos--Deo magis obedientiam quam hominibus'; I Kings 18: `Helias regem non veretur sed ei peccatum in faciem exprobrat audendum concionatori' (p. 36) -- `Bilney is obviously zealous for right and just dealing. Would that God would raise up once more a true prophet! .But in his attitude to Authority we find that Bilney is extremely bold. For just cause a King may be rebuked. Custom may not be blindly followed. Bilney states most emphatically that the Church can err, so there is no certain guidance in `the voice of the Church'.'(p. 49 f.)
