Je nach Situation und Bedürfnissen des Klienten kann der Coach gefordert sein, auf einer oder allen genannten Ebenen Unterstützung zu leisten, was bedeutet, daß er eine oder mehrere Rollen übernehmen muß. Guiding und Caretaking (Leiten und Betreuen) Hier bezieht sich die Unterstützung auf die Umgebung, in der Veränderung stattfindet. Guiding beinhaltet, einen Menschen oder eine Gruppe auf einem Pfad zu geleiten, der von einem augenblicklichen Zustand zu einem gewünschten Zustand führt. Dies setzt voraus, daß der betreffende Guide bereits am Zielort war und daß er den besten Weg zu diesem hin (oder zumindest irgendeinen Weg dorthin) kennt. Als Caretaker bietet man eine sichere und unterstützende Umgebung. Dazu muß man dem äußeren Kontext Aufmerksamkeit schenken, dafür sorgen, daß alles Erforderliche zur Verfügung steht, und unnötige Ablenkungen und Störungen von außen unterbinden. Performance-Coaching Traditionelles Performance-Coaching konzentriert sich auf die Verhaltensebene: Man hilft einem anderen Menschen, eine bestimmt Verhaltensleistung zu erreichen oder zu verbessern. Auf dieser Ebene wirksame Coaching-Methoden basieren hauptsächlich auf einem sportlichen Trainingsmodell und fördern das Gewahrsein der vorhandenen Ressourcen und Fähigkeiten sowie die Entwicklung bewußter Kompetenz. Sie machen durch sorgsame Beobachtung und durch Feedback die Fähigkeiten von Menschen nutzbar und fördern die Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Team-Mitgliedern. Ein guter Performance-Coach in diesem Sinne beobachtet das Verhalten seiner Klienten und gibt ihnen dann Tips und Empfehlungen für die Verbesserung ihrer Leistungen in bestimmten Zusammenhängen und Situationen. Lehren Lehren beinhaltet, einem Menschen bei der Entwicklung kognitiver Fertigkeiten und Fähigkeiten zu helfen. Lehren hat zum Ziel, Menschen darin zu unterstützen, daß sie ihre Lernkompetenzen und damit zusammenhängende geistige Fähigkeiten erweitern. Lehren konzentriert sich auf den Erwerb allgemeiner kognitiver Fähigkeiten, nicht auf das Erreichen spezieller Leistungen in bestimmten Situationen. Ein Lehrer hilft Menschen, neue Strategien des Denkens und Handelns zu entwickeln. Beim Lehren liegt die Betonung mehr auf dem Erlernen neuer Dinge als auf der Verfeinerung bereits erreichter Leistungen. Mentoring Mentoring beinhaltet, jemanden zur Entdeckung seiner eigenen unbewußten Kompetenzen und zur Überwindung innerer Widerstände und Störfaktoren anzuleiten, indem man an den Betreffenden glaubt und seine positiven Absichten anerkennt. Mentoren beeinflussen die Glaubenssätze (bzw. Überzeugungen) und Werte eines Menschen auf positive Weise; dies geschieht durch "Mitschwingen", Freisetzen und Enthüllen der inneren Weisheit des Betreffenden, was der Mentor häufig durch sein eigenes Beispiel bewirkt. Diese Art von Mentoring wird von Menschen oft verinnerlicht und so zu einem festen Bestandteil ihrer selbst, so daß die äußere physische Anwesenheit eines Mentors nicht mehr erforderlich ist. Menschen können sich "innere Mentoren" schaffen und in vielen Situationen ihren Rat und ihre Empfehlungen nutzen. Sponsoring Sponsoring ist der Prozeß des Erkennens und Anerkennens "sehen und segnen" der Essenz oder Identität eines anderen Menschen." Robert Dilts bleibt auch mit diesem Werk seinen - oder Gregory Batesons - logischen Ebenen treu, nur daß er sie diesmal auf Coaching anwendet. Daraus ergibt sich eine sehr interessante, weil facettenreiche, Sicht auf verschiedene Aufträge und Strategien im Coachingprozeß. Die einzelnen Ebenen gliedert er nach 1. On a bifolium, addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'Sir Robert Bateson Harvey Bart. | Langley Park | near Uxbridge Bucks | England'. Docketted on same page: 'Harvey Bateson | Barbadoes | Recd after his Death | Apl. 1805'. He conveys the news o…f his appointment, thanks his uncle, and reports: 'We are waiting in expectation of a Spanish War and as the Amelia sails will I dare say we shall make something'. He has been obliged to draw on his uncle, 'as my mess will cost me a great Deal [.] Sir Samuel Hood was married the other day To Miss McKenzie a Daughter of Lord Seaforths and appears to be very happy at last he has every reason to be so - we had great rejoicing for several days on board the different ships'. He expresses regret on leaving HMS Centaur, and considers himself 'fortunate in having escaped the Fever but more people die merely through Fear having such a bad account of the West Indies they imagin they must die so they go to bed and are off in 2 days such is the case with a great many'. A postscript conveys the worrying news: 'I have joined the Amelia she is very sickly having Lost 120 men by the Fever - but do not mention it to my Mother as it will distress her very much'. The copy document is 2 pp., folio. On a bifolium docketted on reverse of second leaf: 'A Copy of Harvey Bateson's Apointmt. [sic] to be Lieutenant on the Board the Amelia | 7th. day of Novr. 1804'. It begins: 'In pursuant of directions from Saml Hood Esqr Commodore and commander in chief of His Majestys Ships and Vessels employed and to be employed at Barbadoes the Leward Islands &c. &c. &c. | dated this seventh daya of November 1804 we have examined Mr Harvey Bateson, who appears to be more than Twenty One Years of age, and has been to Sea, more than Six Years, in the Sips and Quality as Undermentioned.' A table giving details of his service on HMS Serius and HMS Centaur follows. 'He produceth Journals kept by himself in theh Serius and Centaur and Certificates from Captains Littlehales Maxwell Shipley and Richardson of his dilgence Sobriety and obedient to command he can Splice Knot, reef a Sail, work a Ship in sailing, Shift his Tides, Keep a Reckoning of a Ship's way by plain sailing and Mercator, Observe by theh Sun or Star, find the Variation of the Compass, and is Qualified to do his duty as an Able Seaman and a Midshipman | Given Under our Hands on board the Centaur Carlisle Bay Barbadoes 7 Novr. 1804'.

In good condition, lightly aged, with closed tear caused by breaking open of seal. Reads: 'The dissolution of Parliament will I trust apologize for the liberty I take in requesting the continu…ance of your friendly offices in the county of Antrim, but I cannot apply for a new favor without expressing my obligations for those already conferred, and of assuring you that I remain most truly, Sir, Your faithful & very humble Servant'. Copy of Bateson-Harvey's reply. 1p., 4to. Good, on lightly-aged paper. He writes that he has already written to his agent in Antrim, 'to support with my Interest the return of the late members', and that he flatters himself that 'this will meet your Lordships wishes'. Hertford had represented Antrim County between 1768 and 1776.

He begins by expressing his pleasure on Bateson's 'kind attention in naming me one of the God Fathers to your little Boy' [the future Conservative MP Robert Bateson (1816-1843)]. He next turns to the agricultural crisis: 'The accot. you give me of…the state of the North of Ireland is very distressing under these circumstances. I feel no inclination to witness it by visiting my Estate there this Summer. I assure you there has been much distress also in this Country few Gentlemen indeed have been paid the whole of their Rent & some of my friends have been obliged to occupy their Farms themselves, but within the last fortnight from what cause I cant say theh Price of Wheat has risen considerably & our Farmers begin to smile & enquire about Farms to let & I trust in less than a Twelve Month all will be well again'. He reports that the 'Price of Landed Estates has fallen with us from the Scarcity of Money'. He wonders how things stand in Ireland: 'I thought with you about the Property Tax, but I feel the comfort now of its being repeal'd perhaps'. He has observed 'the Inquisitorial & insufferable tendeny of its being a Commission', and hopes 'Ministers will never be driven to adopt it again'. He reports that his son Robert has 'gone on a sporting excursion to Scotland', adding 'He has not the same itch for travel thaht I had at his age'. He asks after 'the Dunns' and 'the Hamills, and asks to be remembered to 'yr Uncle William & with my best regards to Mrs. Bateson'.
