Signed by the photographer and collaborator M. U. Bates on both the title page and front end page, which also carries a gift inscription to H. E. McFaddin. Also included is a letter from 1933 from Mr. Bates to Mr. McFadden. External cover the book shows bumping and some soiling along with a couple light wrinkles to the cloth. Internal binding is good at both boards but there is some thin cracks starting in a couple areas of the book. All photographs have been verified as being present though the one at page 186 extends outside the page block slightly which is caused wear to the edges over the decades. Paper is toned due to age and there is some spotting and foxing present. Signed by Illustrator(s).

Vintage borderless black-and-white studio still photograph from the 1966 French-Italian film. Seen is actor Alan Bates serenading the cast and crew on a busted piano. At the end of WWI, the German army booby-traps a small French town, prompting mayhem and panic, and the local lunatics escape from an asylum. A lone Scottish soldier (Bates) is sent to disarm a bomb placed in the town square. Shot on location in Oise, France. 8 x 10 inches. Two corner creases, else Near Fine.

All volumes generally in excellent, well kept condition. All well bound and internally very clean, all with dustjackets which have very light occasional wear and tear, with one volume (Renaissance Architecture) having a much worse spot of wear, with one part heavily worn and torn on the front panel and with a smaller tear at the spine. Otherwise the whole set is excellent, slipcases also so with just some occasional rubbing and scuffing, but quite structurally sound and attractive.
