Jahrhundert bot die venezianische Malerei ein außerordentlich reiches Panorama, sowohl was die Bildthemen als was die Künstler anbelangte. Zu Beginn des 15. Jahrhunderts dagegen kann von einer eigenständigen venezianischen Schule kaum gesprochen werden. Zu jener Zeit, als die Weiterentwicklung der durch Jahrhunderte mehr nach Byzanz als nach Europa gewandten bisherigen Kunst nicht mehr möglich war, begann die venezianische Malerei die Themen der großartigen spätgotischen Kunst, welche in den andern Gebieten Italiens zu ihrer höchsten Entfaltung gekommen war, in sich aufzunehmen und zu verarbeiten, so wie sich die Venezianische Republik in poetischer Hinsicht der Eroberung ihres Hinterlandes zuwandte, um sich als italienische Territorialmacht zu behaupten.
