Full leather. Zustand: Near fine. First John Baskerville Edition. Octavo, [two volumes], [i], ii-lxix, 416pp; 390pp. Full brown calf, thin gilt trim to covers. Five raised bands, title in gilt over red and green morocco labels affixed to spine. Gilt embellishments to compartments on spine. Solid text blocks, small chips to corne…rs, faint creasing along hinges. Light foxing along endpapers, occasional spotting throughout text. Overall, a bright, near fine example. Previous ownership bookplate affixed to front endpaper of both volumes. (Gaskell 4a) (Gaskell 5a). In addition to Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, John Baskerville is celebrated for his clear printings of Virgil (1757), Joseph Addison works (1761), The Bible (1763), and Vergil in English (1766). He is the namesake of the modern Baskerville typeface. A complete set of Paradise Lost together with Paradise Regained by John Milton. This is the first edition printed by type designer John Baskerville for J. and R. Tonson, published in 1758. (illustrator).
