He concludes by reviewing the events of the previous four years: 'From one end of the country to the other the workers have been in a state of ferment. Great and numerous strikes have taken place. For the first time a National Strike Federation has been attempted, and with gratifying evidences of success. Our relations with the workers abroad have become closer and more cordial. Slowly and painfully the son of man has been marching to victory. [.]' Scarce: the only copies on COPAC at the University of London and Leeds University.

Daintrey, Solicitor, Sidney ENGLAND and Scotland have long been running the race of civilization under similar circumstances. But it is well known that their laws are nearly as distinct as if each was a foreign country to the other.Though it may be true in a general sense that the result is now much the same in both countries as regards the main elements of rational liberty, yet the details of the respective processes by which this result is attained pften differ widely. The founders of Scottish jurisprudence havin drawn largely upon the Roman law for its principles and its nomenclature. Vol. I. (.II.) Oktav. (I:) XV, 488 S.; (II:) XVI, 466 S. 2 zeitgenössische, hellbraune Kalbslederbände mit fünf erhabenen Bünden. P.5000. n Ancient Greece, bankruptcy did not exist. If a man owed and he could not pay, he and his wife, children or servants were forced into "debt slavery" until the creditor recouped losses through their physical labour. Many city-states in ancient Greece limited debt slavery to a period of five years; debt slaves had protection of life and limb, which regular slaves did not have. However, servants of the debtor could be retained beyond that deadline by the creditor and were often forced to serve their new lord for a lifetime, usually under significantly harsher conditions. An exception to this rule was Athens, which by the laws of Solon forbade enslavement for debt; as a consequence, most Athenian slaves were foreigners (Greek or otherwise). The Statute of Bankrupts of 1542 was the first statute under English law dealing with bankruptcy or insolvency.[3] Bankruptcy is also documented in East Asia. According to al-Maqrizi, the Yassa of Genghis Khan contained a provision that mandated the death penalty for anyone who became bankrupt three times. A failure of a nation to meet bond repayments has been seen on many occasions. In a similar way, Philip II of Spain had to declare four state bankruptcies in 1557, 1560, 1575 and 1596. According to Kenneth S. Rogoff, "Although the development of international capital markets was quite limited prior to 1800, we nevertheless catalog the various defaults of France, Portugal, Prussia, Spain, and the early Italian city-states. At the edge of Europe, Egypt, Russia, and Turkey have histories of chronic default as well."[4] The principal focus of modern insolvency legislation and business debt restructuring practices no longer rests on the elimination of insolvent entities, but on the remodeling of the financial and organizational structure of debtors experiencing financial distress so as to permit the rehabilitation and continuation of the business.

William Leonard Thomas Pyle Taunton (1780-1850) was the son of Rev Dr Robert Taunton (c1742-1797) and Frances (c1752-1819), daughter and co-heiress of Leonard Cropp of Hampshire. Rev Taunton purchased the Great Cumberwell estate in 1787 and was a signatory to a petition of Bradford residents in 1789. There is a memorial in Holy Trinity Church, Bradford to Rev Taunton, his wife, five sons and two daughters. William went to Oxford University in 1796 and was practising as a barrister-at-law at the Middle Temple in London in 1804. By the 1820s he was living in Clifton, Bristol and had chambers in Corn Street, Bristol. He was active in Bristol as a promoter of the Avon & Gloucestershire Railway in 1828, as a founding member of the Bristol Charities in 1836 and a Liberal Councillor in St James' Ward from 1838 to 1841. He took an active part in the Bristol Institution, especially the mineral collections and was elected a Fellow of the Geological Society of London in 1831. He and others who had an interest in the property, sold the Great Cumberwell estate in 1832.
