No binding. Zustand: Very Good. FIRST STATE. ACQUIRED BY HUGH PERCY, THE SAVIOUR OF THE BRITISH AT LEXINGTON AND CONCORD. 705 x 1040 mm., in 2 sheets joined, large aquatint and etched engraving, UNFOLDED AND UNCUT, with the LVG watermark. With pamphlet, quarto (280 x 230 mm.), original blue wrappers, typographic title, pp. 5-(12), there are no pages 3-4 which agrees with the John Carter Brown example. The Earl Percy example of the FIRST STATE of one of the most important Revolutionary War illustrations of Boston and its approaches. Accompanied by the VERY RARE twelve page PAMPHLET by George Callender entitled 'Nautical remarks and observations for the chart of the harbour of Boston. Composed from different surveys; but principally from that taken in 1769'. Callendar was the Master of His Majesty's Ship the Romney. Commissioned in 1762 she served extensively in North America arriving in Boston 17 May 1768 to support the British during the enforcement of the Townsend Acts. Short of men it was the pressing of local men into service which increased tension in the town to a level which broke out in the Boston Massacre of 1770.Hugh Percy, later 2nd Duke of Northumberland (1742-1817), famously served at Concord and Lexington in 1775. He had been the Member of Parliament for Westminster from 1763 and had opposed policies that led to the American War of Independence. He was however, sent to Boston in May 1774 as brigadier-general, colonel of the Fifth Regiment of Foot. His regular communication with his father offers a fascinating incite into the situation. His letter of 12 September 1774 records that the colonies were 'now in as open state of Rebellion as Scotland was in the year 45' (ODNB).Percy was commander of the British relief force at Lexington and Concord, on 19 April 1775, and son of the Duke of Northumberland. He is largely credited with avoiding a complete disaster for the British. It was this retreat that led Percy to record respect for the resolve for American forces (Fischer). In July 1775 he was made major-general. It is believed he had returned to London during that summer. It is believed that it was Percy who carried over the manuscript map of Boston by Richard Williams to London. The printed version by Andrew Dury was published on 12 March 1776 and states 'sent over by the Son of a Nobleman to his Father in Town, by Whose Permission it is Published'. This fist state of the Des Barres was published 5 August 1775 when he was likely in London. He would most certainly have had an interest in acquiring a copy and indeed returned to America later taking part in the campaigns in and around New York the following year. He became the second Duke of Northumberland on the death of his father in 1786.This chart is part of a very large body of work known as the 'Atlantic Neptune' undertaken by Des Barres It is one of the greatest hydrographic achievements of the eighteenth century. The French and Indian War highlighted the lack of accurate mapping of the vast territories now under British control in North America. Samuel Holland was entrusted with the task of accurately mapping the northern portion of these territories. He proposed using the latest accurate methods which included astronomical readings and triangulation. In 1769 he personally was still working in Canadian waters but had instructed Callendar to undertake the survey of Boston. In England Des Barres was in charge of undertaking the detailed engraving. He set about providing the British government with more accurate mapping of the entire coastline of America and Canada. They proved to be of just as much use to the American Rebel forces. Their quality and accuracy are well known and deserved. This particular chart is notable for recording Boston as it was at the outbreak of hostilities. It illustrates the British defences before the siege. The second state in particular out of the four later ones would record the progress of the siege works constructed by the Americans around the city. As the title in.

one-page folio. (horizontal folds, several tears with no loss of text). matted & framed (size of frame: 21.75 x 16 inches; 55.2 x 40.6 cm.). A distinguished military engineer, DesBarres served in the British Army in North America during the Seven Years' War, and participated in the capture of Louisbourg in 1758 and of Quebec in 1759. General James Wolfe used a chart which he prepared of the St. Lawrence River and approaches to Quebec in his assault on the city. From 1763 to 1773 DesBarres surveyed and charted the Atlantic coast from Newfoundland to New York, which resulted in the publication in 1777 of the Atlantic Neptune, a four-volume atlas "which stands as a landmark in Canadian cartographic achievement" (R.J.Morgan, DCB, VI pp. 196) and is considered to be the most important atlas of North America published in the eighteenth century. He went on to become the first Lieutenant Governor of Cape Breton, 1784-87, the founder of Sydney, and the Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island, 1804-12. He faced considerable opposition to his administration in both colonies and with the home government and in each instance was recalled to England. The present document is dated just one month before his recall from Prince Edward Island in August of 1812. In it DesBarres reprimands the Grand Jury for overstepping the bounds of their authority although he says he is willing to attribute their statements to "good intentions in an infant colony language which under other circumstances might be very differently received.".

DES BARRES, Joseph Frederick Wallet (1721-1824). Cape Elizabeth to Newburyport in Maine. London: Publish'd according to Act of Parliament by J.F.W. Des Barres Esqr. April 29, 1776 2 sheets, joined (33 x 46 inches). A fine and attractive engraved chart of the area surrounding Piscataqua Harbour in Maine (old vertical folds). A magnificent chart from Des Barres's superb atlas, The Atlantic Neptune, published for the use of the Royal Navy of Great Britain. under the Directions of the Right Honble. the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty. London, [1774-1779], which included a comprehensive survey of the coasts of Nova Scotia, the coasts and harbors of the Gulf and River of St. Lawrence and the Atlantic coast of North America from New York to Mexico, and New England, in more than 100 engraved charts, views and elevations. Des Barres's service to the British Crown began in about 1752 when he enrolled as a cadet at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich near London. Founded in 1741 the Academy was established to teach all the branches of mathematics necessary for men who would serve in the Artillery or as Engineers. Des Barres had already received an extensive education in his native Switzerland where he had studied both applied and theoretical mathematics at the University of Basle. Upon the completion of his training he became one of the first officers to be commissioned in the newly formed Royal American Regiment. Thus, it was that at the close of the French and Indian War, Des Barres was sent to America by the British Admiralty to survey the coasts of the Maritime Provinces. These provinces, so recently acquired from France, had never been adequately mapped, and Des Barres spent the next ten years constructing a series of charts of unparalleled accuracy and beauty. Ultimately the project was expanded to include the entire Atlantic and gulf coasts of North America and his findings were published in the monumental "Atlantic Neptune". Copies of The Atlantic Neptune were compiled as they were ordered, principally for naval captains or merchant mariners, and therefore no standard collation exists and no two recorded copies will contain the same compliment of charts, nor be bound in exactly the same sequence. "Nautical charting took an unprecedented leap toward greater precision and graphic sophistication with the publication of Des Barres's Atlantic Neptune. The Neptune provided the first generally accurate charts of many areas, and it was relied upon well into the nineteenth century. Des Barres also standardized many of the symbols, such as for navigational hazards, that are found on nautical charts to this day. Not only were Des Barres's charts technically superior to earlier works, but they were also objects of fine printing and possessed an artistry that transcended their utilitarian purpose. Moreover, this was achieved on works that were often breathtakingly large in scale, with some charts measuring over ten feet in length. Most of the surveys on which the charts of the Neptune were based were conducted between 1763 and 1773. Des Barres was then commissioned to assemble these surveys, which included his own fine work in Nova Scotia, prepare their engraving, and have them bound into usable format. Surveys of the New York and New England areas were carried out by various officers under the command of Major Samuel Holland, one of the most capable of all colonial cartographers. In some but not all cases, Des Barres provided the names of the actual surveyors of the charts. When war with the American colonies broke out, the need for good charts of American waters became imperative, and in the years prior to the war, Des Barres project was given high priority. Between 1776 and 1779, Des Barres and his more than twenty assistants had taken over two London townhouses to complete the Neptune" (Paul E. Cohen and Robert T. Augustyn, Manhattan in Maps 1527-1995, New York, 1997, pp.66-69).

DES BARRES, Joseph Frederick Wallet (1721-1824). The Kennebec River. London: Publish'd according to Act of Parliament April 24 1776 by J.F.W. Des Barres Esqr. 2 sheets, joined (42 4/8 x 30 4/8 inches) A fine chart of the Kennebec or Sagadehoc River watershed in Maine (old vertical folds). Excellent. Two sheets joined as issued. Light soiling and a few marginal mends not impacting printed image. Printer's crease at top, reinforced in border. Size 41 x 29.5 Inches. This beautifully engraved map is the earliest acquirable issue of J. F. W. Des Barres' 1776 Buzzard's Bay and the Vineyard Sound, capturing western Martha's Vineyard and the southern harbors of the Massachusetts mainland at the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War (1775 - 1783). It contains the first detailed mapping of the western part of Martha's Vineyard and the most accurate chart of the waters of Buzzard's Bay and Vineyard Sound. It remained authoritative for nearly 50 years. A Closer Look The chart appeared in one of the greatest maritime atlases ever produced, The Atlantic Neptune . This second state of the chart, published in 1776, was the first of the chart to show Martha's Vineyard and the Elizabeth Islands; the first state, lacking these, while cited in Sellers and Van Ee, does not appear on the market and has no cataloged holdings. Resulting from meticulous surveys completed by Samuel Holland, this large chart - two sheets, joined - covers from Wareham, Massachusetts (Werham) in the north to Squibnocket Point (Squipnocket) on Martha's Vineyard. Its lateral scope runs from Gooseberry Island in the west (unnamed but recognizable) to Buttermilk Bay. Martha's Vineyard is depicted from West Chop and Vineyard Haven westwards. Coverages includes New Bedford, western Martha's Vineyard, and the crucial harbor of Woods Hole. While primarily focused on coastlines, navigational risks, depth soundings, and anchorages, Des Barres' chart marks not only towns but also individual houses, churches, windmills, and settlement boundaries. There are some areas of coastal relief as well. The chart is graced by one set of rhumb lines, with north marked by a large fleur-de-lis; a smaller fleur notes magnetic variation. This is an important distinction because the third state of the chart contains three sets of rhumb lines. Martha's Vineyard This mapping of the western part of the Vineyard is the first detailed map of that part of the island and the finest of the 18th century. It includes the Native American settlement at Gay Head (Aquinnah) and the road connecting Menemsha Pond and Tisbury. Scattered along the road and the coast are more than 200 individual homes, windmills, and churches. The towns of Tisbury and Chilmark are named. Chilmark is applied to both the town bearing that name today and the neighboring town of Aquinnah. (Then termed part of Chilmark, it was renamed Gay Head in 1870. In 1997, Gay Head embraced its Wampanoag heritage, changing its name to Aquinnah.) Mainland Massachusetts and Buzzard's Bay The coastline of Buzzard's Bay is superbly charted. Gooseberry Island can be seen at the border of the chart. Slocum's River appears as Pascamanset (the name applied to the freshwater portion of the river before reaching the estuary). On the banks of the Acushnet River, Fair Haven is named. Though unnamed, New Bedford appears at the north end of the river. The Post Road connecting New Bedford and Apponagansett is noted. Red Brook Harbor and the Red Brook Meeting House are on the east shore of Buzzards Bay. The presence of the meeting houses, in particular, falls under the category of military detail, as meeting houses served as mustering points for the colonial militia. Woods Hole Central to the chart is the passage of Woods Hole, between Cape Cod and the first of the Elizabeth Islands. This is the most completely surveyed of all the passages between the islands, with copious depth soundings. Although not yet the whaling center it would become in the 19th century, Woods Hole represented one of the best harbors on southern Cape Cod. As represented here, it guards the key passage connecting the Vineyard Sound and Buzzards Bay. Publication History and Census This chart was first published in Des Barres' Atlantic Neptune on April 25, 1776. According to S.
