Typed signed letter (with a coloured photograph enclosed) written on headed notepaper from Fleur Cage at Janus Publishing Company Limited, Edinburgh House, 19 Nassau Street, London W1N 7RE to June Benn, St. AndrewÕs House, 113 Mycenae Road, Blackheath, London, SE3 7RX dated 9th April 1999 and consisting of about 40 words in which she sends back the coloured photograph returned from Isis of a young June Barraclough which was used for the front cover of this edition loosely inserted. Envelope with rough handwritten notes in BarracloughÕs hand and with black and white photograph inside of a family group loosely inserted. Typed signed letter from John Charlton loosely inserted. He was living in Australia at the time of writing dated 1st June 2003, two pages in length. He was at school with June Barraclough and had recently read her book which evoked memories of those days. He also tells her about his successful career in broadcasting. Handwritten signed letter in the original envelope from Lynne Eker loosely inserted postmarked 20.2.03 and sent from Guernsey via Isis who forwarded it to June Barraclough enclosing a photocopy which she appears to think resembles the authorÕs photograph. Handwritten note from Southminster Library with new ticket and informing her they donÕt have an L.P. copy of this book. A collection of semi-autobiographical vignettes that recount a childhood in the West Riding of Yorkshire during the 1930s and 1940s. June Barraclough (1930-2006) was born and brought up at Brighouse, Yorkshire. She went to Somerville College, Oxford graduating with honours in Modern Languages in 1952. Handwritten signed fan letter from a Yorkshire woman with a family connection to the textile business who enjoyed the book loosely inserted. Newspaper cutting loosely inserted. Handwritten signed letter from the literary critic and academic Margery Fisher to Mrs Benn written on headed notepaper from Ashton Manor, Northampton NN7 2JL dated 14.10.87 and consisting of about 350 words in which she finds much in common with Barraclough and says she really enjoyed the book. She mentions Oundle and her son who works for Collins. Handwritten signed postcard from the Librarian, Pauline Adams at Somerville College Oxford, no date but added to the library on 19th September and consisting of about 40 words congratulating Barraclough and thanking her for the book. Three page handwritten signed letter from Kathleen ? to June [Benn] written on headed notepaper from 31 Angus Gardens, Colindale, London NW9 5LG dated 27th November 1986 in which she discusses the book at length commenting on the characters etc. She says she is attending the Somerville lunch in January and mentions publishing problems and research for her next book. Typed signed letter and a handwritten signed postcard from Jenny McK ? to June [Benn] addressed from 47, Chiswick Common Road, London W4 1RZ dated 12/03/97 and 18/03/97 in which she expresses her thanks for some advice and says she thoroughly enjoyed the book. She mentions an arrangement to show a couple of chapters of her book to the publisher Hilary Rubenstein and also mentions Oxford. Typed research with note in authorÕs hand concerning an illegitimate daughter of the Clayton/Tesseyman family, the possible father being George Howard, Lord Morpeth later the Sixth Earl of Carlisle and a photocopied two page letter from the biographer Brian Masters on the same subject. One sheet of notepaper with BarracloughÕs handwritten notes on both sides on the family history of the Earls of Carlisle, Castle Howard and a connection to Lord Byron. A quantity of other material loosely inserted including two photographs, three photocopies of photographs, eight newspaper cuttings, chiefly relating to Castle Howard, various cards and letters thanking the author for the book and expressing enjoyment on reading it and one about Barraclough family history. He discusses her writing, her plot the 'surprising bits' and several of the charcters in some detail, sex scenes, pregnancy, suicide etc., He writes that he cannot understand why she is not better known-- blaming the publisher. He aslo mentions the succes of Vikram Seth's 1000 page novel 'A Suitable Boy' and Seth's poetry. He ends by saying he will be sending a copy of his new novel 'Marriage Beyond Redemption' and signs off 'with love Stanley'.
