He married the famous muse Misia Godebska in 1893.Provenance: Natanson estate.Thadée Natanson, né à Varsovie en 1868, est issu d'une riche famille polonaise émigrée à Paris. Avec ses deux frères Alexandre et Louis-Alfred et leurs camarades du lycée Condorcet, il fonde en 1889 une revue entièrement dédiée à la poésie, La Revue Blanche. Il épouse Misia Godebska en 1893, laquelle devient rapidement la "Reine de Paris". Le couple reçoit des personnalités du monde artistique et littéraire de la Belle Époque, notamment Stéphane Mallarmé, Félix Vallotton, Toulouse-Lautrec, Octave Mirbeau ou encore Marcel Proust. Son engagement en faveur d'Alfred Dreyfus lui fait perdre de nombreux soutiens et La Revue Blanche fait faillite peu de temps après son divorce avec Misia en 1905. Both letters to the playwright and poet Maurice Pottecher, concerning his Théâtre du peuple in Bussang and a new book. - Shortly before the opening of the season of the open-air People's Theatre, Barrès asked Pottecher to write a letter on the theatre that he would turn into a piece for his journal "Le Drapeau": "Voici qu'approche le moment de vos représentations d'été. Écrivez-moi donc une lettre, au courant de la plume, dont je ferai faire 'une conversation' sur vos projets pour le Drapeau". The Théâtre du peuple opened as an open-air theatre in 1895, staging folk and morality plays at low ticket prices. Pottecher led the theatre until his death in 1960, and it is still operative today. - Le Drapeau, the official newspaper of the Ligue des patriotes, was considerably less successful. Founded by Louis-Robert d'Hurcourt in 1881, Paul Déroulède took personal control of the weekly newspaper in 1885. Despite several important contributors, Le Drapeau never attracted a large readership. In March 1901, Déroulède charged Barrès with transforming Le Drapeau into a daily newspaper, but it was discontinued only months later, in December 1901. Thus, the letter must date to the summer of 1901. - The letter from Charmes on headed stationery, with good wishes and congratulations on the publication of a book.

To a female friend, agreeing with her statement that not everything has been said about Jeanne d'Arc and inviting her to his conference on Blaise Pascal: "J'ai dit, on a dit tout le possible sur Jeanne d'Arc. Et pourtant vous avez raison, il faut le redire. Mais c'est le plus dur de cette vie d'écrivain politique, rabâcher, se redire sans cesse. Je fais le 19, une conférence sur Pascal. Donc nous serons là vers le 17. Vous avez souvent regretté de ne pas me voir ici [.]". - Maurice Barrès published two monographs on Jeanne d'Arc, both after 1909: "Le Jubilé de Jeanne d'Arc" in 1912 and "Autour de Jeanne d'Arc" in 1916. The mentioned conference resulted in the 1910 publication "L'Angoisse de Pascal". - On stationery with printed address "Château de Mirabeau - Vaucluse". Barrès had acquired the Château in 1907. Well preserved.

Interesting letter to a female friend and political activist, informing her that she should not use the term "Alsace-Lorraine" on a map, as it was an obsolete German political and administrative term, suggesting instead that she be more specific, depending on which of the two regions she will discuss at an unspecified event, or that she mention both separately: "Il ne faut jamais dire 'Alsace-Lorraine'. C'est une expression politique et administrative inventée par les Allemands et qui ne répond plus à rien. Elle n'a jamais eu un sens français. Pour les français, il y a l'Alsace et puis il y a la Lorraine, qui sont deux pays absolument différents. Si vous rectifiez vos cartes, ou bien si vous mettez une annonce dans les journaux ou à l'entrée de votre salle, mettez l'Alsace, mettez la Lorraine, ou bien mettez l'Alsace et la Lorraine. Mais de quoi allez vous parler ? Est-ce de l'Alsace, est-ce de la Lorraine, est-ce des deux ? [.]". - Furthermore, Barrès warns the recipient that the writer and activist Émile Hinzelin might be offended and avoid the event. - The demand for the return of Alsace and Lorraine was central to Maurice Barrès's politics during German occupation (1871-1918), and he published several books and countless articles on the topic. Barrès also wrote a preface to Émile Heugelin's 1914 publication "L'Alsace sous le joug", and both contributed to Émile Wetterlé's essay collection "Notre Alsace, notre Lorraine" in 1919, following the annexation of the regions to the French Republic. - On stationery of the Chambre des Députés.
