El autor de este libro pertenece a esa generación de escritores franceses que abrazaron las nuevas ideas del siglo XX. Nacionalista antes de la guerra, casado con la hermana de Brasillach, no colaboró sin embargo durante la ocupación de Francia. Una victoria que le era regalada por el invasor de su país no le parecía digna y aparte de algunos artículos, sobre temas culturales, en las revistas de la colaboración en que estaba su cuñado, Bardeche no contribuirá al esfuerzo de guerra alemán. Eso no le impedirá ser detenido en 1945, menos por sus escritos que para obligar a su cuñado a salir a la luz y poder así ejecutarlo. Esa toma de rehenes en la que él es el rehén, ese asesinato legal, o al menos jurídicamente aprobado, de su cuñado, marcarán el resto de la vida de Bardeche. El momento es el inmediato después de la Catástrofe de 1945, cuando Estados Unidos e Inglaterra pasan de ser los mejores amigos de la Rusia de Stalin a ser sus enemigos. El texto es una muestra de aquel momento, ya casi olvidado de la historia. El mundo ha cambiado mucho desde entonces pero algunas cosas, como el empleo del llamado antifascismo para promover políticas que van en contra de los pueblos europeos, siguen vigentes. El momento en que fue escrita esta obra la trasforma también no tan sólo en un testigo de la Europa que fue, sino también en un testimonio del valor de su autor, un hombre que escogió voluntariamente el camino del honor y la fidelidad por encima de los intereses y se unió a la Colaboración, si es que lo hizo, justo cuando esta acababa.
